GMC Haldwani probes alleged ragging, assault on 2nd year MBBS student, questions 30 medicos

Haldwani: Investigating allegations of ragging and assault of a second-year medical student, the college authorities at Government Medical College Haldwani have questioned a total of 30 medical students at the institute.
However, any assault or ragging of the medico was not confirmed by the preliminary investigation conducted by the anti-ragging committee of the college. Now, the management has summoned the father of the complainant medico.
This comes after a complaint was submitted by the father of the second-year medico, who was allegedly hospitalized after being assaulted by third-year MBBS students.
What are the allegations?
According to a Jagran report, the college management has informed that a student meeting was held on the night of October 16th to prepare for the annual festival. Various committees were formed during the meeting. It has been alleged by a second-year student that he was assaulted by third-year medicos during the meeting. Following this, the student was hospitalized.
The next day, the second-year medico was discharged and a complaint via email was sent to the college management by the student's father on October 20, alleging the ragging of his son.
Anti-Ragging Committee investigates the issue:
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the college management called a meeting of the anti-ragging committee on Wednesday to investigate the matter.
During the probe, the committee separately questioned more than 30 medical students who were present at the time of the incident. While none of them confirmed the assaulted, some of the students said that the complainant student had been fasting for Navratri and had fainted during the meeting.
Based on this, the Anti-Ragging Committee said that the allegations of ragging and assault were not substantiated in its priliminary probe. At present. the college management is trying to contact the father of the second-year medico again and invite him to the college.
Commenting on the matter, Dr. Ajay Arya, Principal of GMC Haldwani, told Jagran, "The Anti-Ragging Committee investigated the case of ragging of a second-year MBBS student and found the complaint to be unsubstantiated. A letter has now been sent to the complainant's father, requesting his arrival at the college. Further action will be taken after this."
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2023, three senior MBBS students of the 2021 batch had been expelled from the college for 6 months and fined Rs 25,000 after reports of alleged ragging on junior students came to the fore. In late 2023, 10 MBBS students were expelled from the hostel for 6 months and were barred from attending classes for a week for allegedly ragging junior students.
In 2024, the college had taken action against two MBBS interns, one final-year medico, one nursing student and one junior researcher for allegations of ragging of a junior MBBS student.
