GMC Nagpur medico suicide: Students held protest seeking justice, Deputy dean resigns

Nagpur: Following the suicide of a final-year MBBS student of Nagpur's Government Medical College and Hospital, deputy dean, Dr Uday Narlawar, who was also serving as the head of the department of community medicine and was in charge of the undergraduate department dealing with MBBS students has now resigned from his post.

In a conversation with TOI, Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye informed that the Deputy Dean had tendered his resignation on December 11, citing personal grounds. The dean verified that he had indeed accepted the resignation and appointed Dr Avinash Turankar, HoD of pharmacology as the new Deputy Dean, who will also oversee the UG department.

Dr Raj provided the statement in response to the claims of the medical students of GMCH Nagpur that Dr Narlawar was removed from his post following their day-long protest which was staged in front of the dean's office on December 11.

On December 10, the students held a candlelight vigil seeking justice for the deceased student. However, the next day, the students in their protest demanded the immediate removal of Dr Narlawar alleging his lack of support and insensitivity towards their concerns contributed to Pawan's tragedy. In addition, they also demanded for a committee to probe the incident, adds the Times of India.

Although the students alleged that the doctor was dismissed from his position as a result of their protest, the authorities maintained that he voluntarily resigned from the post.

According to a recent media report by Navabharat, a four-member inquiry committee was constituted by the authorities who spent approximately four hours interviewing the deceased student's classmates. They allegedly revealed that the deceased had received zero marks in the practical examination, and he was allegedly under stress due to this.

Medical Dialogues team recently reported that a final-year MBBS student of Nagpur's Government Medical College and Hospital committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in the city. The medico was reportedly depressed over his performance in the final year examination.

The 24-year-old medico, a native of Washim district, came in the way of a train in the Butibori area on Saturday

Although no suicide note was discovered, the Police informed prima facie the student died by suicide due to exam stress. His friends and colleagues informed that the deceased student was withdrawn and under pressure in the days leading up to the incident.
