GMC Rajouri gets NMC approval for 50 additional MBBS seats
Jammu: To boost medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, the Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri has recently been approved for a total of 50 additional MBBS seats, raising its annual undergraduate intake from a total of 100 to 150.
This increase follows closely on the heels of a similar recent increase in MBBS seats at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar.
This approval marks another significant milestone in the expansion of medical education in the Union Territory and is expected to substantially increase opportunities for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET)-qualified students seeking admission to government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir.
The increase in intake capacity at GMC Rajouri is expected not only to enhance access to quality medical education but also to contribute to improving the doctor-patient ratio in the long run by producing more qualified medical graduates.
Meanwhile, commenting on the development, the Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Ittoo stated in a post on 'X' that the increase in MBBS seats at GMC Rajouri reflects the government's commitment to expanding medical education and creating better opportunities for aspiring doctors.
She also stated that this increase would strengthen healthcare infrastructure in J&K and help create a more accessible and efficient healthcare system under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
In addition, Dr AS Bhatia, Principal of GMC Rajouri, told Daily Excelsior that with this approval, the only tertiary medical college in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch will be able to admit 150 MBBS students starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
