Telangana crosses 10,000 MBBS seats mark as NMC approves 810 more seats
Hyderabad: Telangana has become one of only five states in India to have more than 10,000 MBBS seats after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 810 additional seats for the 2026-27 academic year.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats, excluding those in Institutes of National Importance (INIs), are available across 823 medical colleges in India for the 2026-27 academic session.
According to the final seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission's (NMC) Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on July 14, 2026, 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed, while 9,911 new seats have been approved through intake increases and newly established medical colleges, taking the total number of MBBS seats to 1,36,939.
In the list, Telangana's total MBBS intake has increased from 9,440 to 10,250 seats with the Apex Medical Commission approving 810 additional seats for the 2026-27 academic year.
With the revised seat matrix, Telangana now has 66 medical colleges offering a combined 10,250 MBBS seats. Of these, government medical colleges account for 4,400 seats, while private medical colleges contribute 5,850 seats.
Of the 810 additional seats allotted to Telangana, 110 have gone to government medical colleges, while the remaining 700 have been distributed among private institutions. The approvals cover 13 existing medical colleges, and a newly established private medical college receiving its first batch of seats.
Among government institutions, the Government Medical College (GMC), Mahabubnagar, and the GMC, Siddipet, have each been granted 25 additional seats. GMC Nizamabad and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad, have each received 30 more seats.
The largest share of the expansion has been in the private sector. Raja Rajeshwari Institute of Medical Sciences (Girls), a newly established medical college, has received approval to admit its first batch of 150 MBBS students. Maheshwara Medical College, Chitkul, Patancheru; MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy; and Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Research Centre and Teaching Hospital have each been granted an additional 100 seats.
Five other private colleges have also received approval for 50 additional seats each. These include Bhaskar Medical College, Yenkapally; Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad; Malla Reddy Medical College for Women, Hyderabad; Mamata Academy of Medical Sciences, Bachupally; and SVS Medical College, Mahabubnagar.
The latest seat matrix also suggests Telangana’s position as one of India’s leading destinations for undergraduate medical education. Among all States, only Karnataka with 15,395 MBBS seats, Uttar Pradesh with 14,000, Tamil Nadu with 13,999, Maharashtra with 13,099 and Telangana with 10,250 have crossed the 10,000-seat milestone.
