Implement AEBAS or lose Recognition: NCISM warns AYUSH Colleges

Bhopal: Asking the Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medical colleges across the country to implement the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS), the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has warned the institutes stating that they would lose their recognition for 2025-2026 if the biometric attendance system is not implemented, FPJ has reported.
NCISM has issued this directive to all Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani (ASU) colleges across India. This directive aims to ensure strict monitoring of faculty attendance.
At present, the country has more than 590 ASU colleges with more than 19,000 teaching staff working at those institutes. However, so far, only 179 such institutes have implemented the AEBAS system.
As per the latest media report by the Free Press Journal, stressing the requirement to install the biometric system to maintain their accreditation, NCISM has informed that otherwise, the colleges would risk losing their recognition, which could have far-reaching consequences for their operations and future enrolments.
Commenting on the matter, the spokesperson for the Ayush Medical Association, Dr. Rakesh Pandey pointed out how the AEBAS system would allow NCISM to directly monitor staff attendance from New Delhi, providing a transparent mechanism to track the performance of both teaching and medical staff. He added that this move is a step towards eliminating negligence in teaching and improving the overall medical system, ultimately benefiting both students and patients.
Previously, the National Medical Commission (NMC) made AEBAS mandatory for the medical colleges for modern medicine as well. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that aiming to combat the issue of ghost faculty in medical colleges and to streamline the attendance of medical students and faculty, NMC had announced launching a portal that would have a biometric attendance system. The Commission had informed that the doctors would have to punch once in every 24 hours while entering or leaving the hospital.
