Kilpauk Medical College 3rd year MBBS student attacked by seniors, probe ordered

Chennai: In a shocking incident reported from Kilpauk Medical College (KMC), a third-year MBBS student sustained serious injuries on his head after two drunken final-year students allegedly attacked him with a beer bottle on his head.

The injured student was immediately rushed to the KMC Hospital by other students and was admitted for treatment. Since it is unclear whether it was a case of ragging or a heated altercation that resulted in an accident, the Dean of the medical college has formed a three-member committee to look into the incident.

According to other students who claimed to have witnessed the incident, as per a TNIE news report alleged that the two seniors who are also house surgeons hit the junior under the influence of alcohol on Thursday night. They said that they had a history of similar crimes.

TOI reported that the student was walking through the hostel corridor under the influence of alcohol when two house surgeon students approached him and asked him to bring a few junior students to them. Agreeing to the request, the junior went to get a few juniors. Watching him walk slowly, the seniors scolded him which led to a verbal altercation. Then, the duo snatched a beer bottle he was holding and attacked him on his head with it.

After witnessing that the seniors allegedly ganged up on the student and were attacking him, other batchmates rushed to his aid. Following the incident, the batchmates informed his parents about it who met the hostel warden to complain about the two senior students. Later, his parents filed a complaint at the police station against the two students on Friday morning.

A police source told TNIE "The victim’s father lodged a complaint on Friday morning. However, since the incident took place inside the college hostel, a report from the internal committee is needed to take further action. The victim’s statement has also been officially recorded by the police. An FIR is yet to be registered."

Refusing the allegations of ragging, a senior doctor said "It was not a case of ragging but a clash between two student groups." On the students' allegation that there were complaints against the two house surgeons in the past, the doctor acknowledged this but said he was not aware of the action taken against them.

Some students at the medical college claimed that no action was taken against the accused senior in previous cases because one of them is the son of an assistant commissioner of police.
