Maharashtra to Send Proposal for ESIC Medical College in Nagpur

Maharashtra- The Maharashtra government has recently assured that the proposal to set up an Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical college in Nagpur will be sent to the Centre soon after rectifying the technical issues.
During the discussion on the question raised by MLA Praveen Datke, Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar told the House that the government is positive about setting up an ESIC medical college in the city.
Datke said the proposed college will increase MBBS seats and become Nagpur's third medical college, after Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Medical College. The project is expected to benefit workers in growing industrial areas like New Nagpur and MIHAN and generate employment. The existing Workers' Hospital in Hanuman Nagar currently serves only as an outpatient department (OPD) facility.
According to a TOI media report, Datke informed the House that the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment has decided to establish 10 new medical colleges across the country, including Nagpur and Pune, by 2025. However, the Central Nagpur MLA further said that proposals had been submitted from other locations, but the Nagpur proposal was yet to be sent.
On this, he questioned the delay despite senior leaders like Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis representing the city.
Meanwhile, responding to questions, Abitkar assured that the proposal would be modified and sent to the Centre soon to expedite the construction of the medical college.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported that to start an MBBS course, compliance with the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC) is strictly necessary, along with adhering to the provisions laid down in the UG Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) 2023 regulations. The Kerala High Court disposed of a plea concerning the proposal to start an MBBS course at the ESIC Model and Super Speciality Hospital in Asramam, Kollam.
