Mulund ESIC Hospital to house new medical college soon

Mumbai: In a major boost to medical education in the state, the Mulund ESIC hospital has received the Center's approval to open a new medical college in the city. In addition to this, the hospital building is also set to be upgraded soon.

The green signal came from the union environment, forest and climate change minister, Bhupinder Yadav and the deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday. The medical college will be the 6th medical college and hospital in Mumbai and people from different districts of Maharashtra would also be benefited from the medical college and hospital.

To provide better healthcare services to people of the city, both Central Government and State Government established ESI Hospital in many parts of Mumbai. ESI Hospital in Mulund has been providing the best healthcare services to ESIC members employees and their families free of cost. It is 61-year-old with a strength of 400 beds. As a result of the old age of the building, it began to decay and in a extremely bad situation.

Although the hospital has a sanctioned strength of 400 beds, only 200 are in use and 50 to 60 of them are occupied daily. There are total 600 medical posts, of which 304 are occupied and 195 are vacant. The hospital also lacks a proper MRI and CT scan machines.

When the new medical college will be completed, the central government will provide modern and high quality equipment for both the medical college and hospital. Furthermore, it was revealed that additional 100 beds could be added to ensure smooth operation of the medical college.

Talking about this, Dr Sanjay Dhawale, a medical officer and former director (medical) of the ESI scheme told HT, “The hospital building is currently not in good condition as it was built in 1962. The scenario is also quite different as the hospital is for industrial workers which are present in fewer numbers in Mumbai today."

“The hospital will be equipped with modern amenities. The present operation will continue as of now. The timeline for the upgradation will be known in a few weeks.” said Rachitkumar Trivedi, general secretary of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) of the Mumbai North East Constituency.
