Mumbai: The NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Nagpur, which received the Maharashtra Cabinet's approval a few weeks ago to become a private university named Lata Mangeshkar Private Medical University, has increased its annual MBBS fee from Rs 13.95 lakh to Rs 21.75 lakh.

With the increase, the revised fee structure is now significantly higher than Rs 13.95 lakh per year approved for the college last year by the state Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA). The earlier fee, when calculated for the 4.5-year MBBS course, came to around Rs 62.78 lakh.

However, the newly approved private university has announced an annual fee of Rs 21.75 lakh for MBBS admissions for the academic year 2026-27, with a 7.5% annual increase in tuition fees.

Therefore, the total cost of the 4.5-year MBBS course is expected to reach around Rs 1.1 crore. If compared with the earlier fee, the total tuition cost for the MBBS course has increased by around 56%.

The sudden increase in the fee structure comes after the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the conversion of the private, unaided medical college into a private university on August 24.

Prior to the conversion, the state FRA had set the fee structure for the institute at Rs 15.63 lakh per year, as per a Hindustan Times report. Following this, the college had submitted a fresh fee proposal to the FRA for the current academic year. During this process, the state cabinet approved its conversion into a private university, and thus the institute had no requirement to get the approval of the state FRA for its fee structure.

Soon after the conversion, the institute issued a notice about the interim fee structure for MBBS admissions for the academic year 2026-27 on its official website.

According to the revised fee structure, the tuition and development fees for students admitted under the state quota and All India Quota have been fixed at Rs 20.75 lakh per year.

In addition, students will have to pay Rs 1 lakh as annual university fees, taking the recurring annual fee to Rs 21.75 lakh. A refundable college caution money of Rs 50,000 will also be charged once at the time of admission. This brings the total first-year payment to Rs 22.25 lakh.

The institute has also fixed separate fees for NRI/OCI and institutional quota students. For NRI/OCI candidates, the tuition and development fee has been fixed at US$45,000 per year, along with a university fee of US$1,100 and a one-time caution money of US$550. In total, the first-year payment stands at US$ 46,650

For students admitted under the institutional quota, the tuition and development fee is Rs 41.50 lakh per year, while the annual university fee is Rs 1 lakh and the one-time caution money is Rs 50,000. In total, the first-year payment stands at Rs 43 lakh.

The annual university fee includes examination, library, and medical examination fees. The institute has stated that no separate charges will be collected for these components, except applicable late fees and fines.

The fee structure also states that the tuition and development fee for undergraduate courses will increase by 7.5% every year until completion of the course. Based on the revised fee and the annual hike, the total cost of the 4.5-year MBBS course is expected to be around Rs 1.1 crore.

The fee structure further states that students admitted to the institute will not be eligible for any government scholarship or fee reimbursement scheme.

Apart from NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, the state cabinet also approved the conversion of two other educational institutions into private universities, which include Dr Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation’s Medical College in Ahilyanagar and Ranjeet Deshmukh Dental College and Research Centre in Nagpur.
