NMC approves 2 new medical colleges in Gujarat
Ahmedabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently approved two new medical colleges in the state, one at Godhra in Panchmahal district and the other at Porbandar.
The inspection of the two colleges was carried out by the NMC on 29th July, following which they had issued the approval in less than a week.
Currently, there are 30 medical colleges in the state which includes private, government and grant-in-aid colleges, with total number of available medical seats amounting to 5,500.
The newly approved two colleges would have 100 seats each, which would increase the total number of available medical seats in the state to 5,700, reports the Times of India.
As per sources, out of the proposed five new medical colleges in the state, the NMC gave its approval for two of them. The other three proposed medical colleges are located at Rajpipla, Navsari and Morbi. The NMC had also reportedly carried out inspection at the other three proposed medical colleges at Rajpipla, Navsari and Morbi.
The approved medical colleges are being constructed at a cost of Rs 660 crore and Rs 330 crore each. And as per sources, 60% of the expenditure would be borne by the central government whereas the remaining 40% would be funded by the state government.
Stating that the two colleges have been approved by the NMC, Manoj Aggarwal, the additional chief secretary of health and family welfare department, Gujarat said, "Each will have 100 MBBS seats. This will help the state's students in a big way,." He added that they are expecting the NMC to give the approval for the three other colleges as well as soon as possible.
The new colleges would be having facilities like laboratories, library, hostel, tutors and paramedical staff. The Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) had recently issued transfer orders to 258 doctors who are working as teachers in medical colleges to the proposed new colleges.
