NMC approves 5 new GMCs in Chhattisgarh, 250 MBBS seats added for 2026-27

Raipur: In a significant move to strengthen undergraduate medical education in Chhattisgarh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the opening of five new government medical colleges in the state for the 2026-27 academic session.

Each of the newly approved colleges has been granted permission to admit 50 MBBS students, taking the total number of newly approved seats to 250. The medical colleges will be established in Geedam (Dantewada), Kunkuri (Jashpur), Manendragarh, Janjgir-Champa, and Kawardha (Kabirdham).

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Commission had refused to approve applications for these five medical colleges after identifying significant deficiencies in infrastructure, faculty, equipment, and mandatory documentation during its assessment.

Following the rejection, the Chhattisgarh government addressed the deficiencies pointed out by the Commission. After reviewing the compliance, the apex medical education regulator granted approval for the establishment of all five medical colleges in the state.

Welcoming the approval, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called it an important milestone for the state's medical education and healthcare sector. He said the government aims to create more opportunities for students to become doctors while strengthening healthcare services in rural and underserved regions.

The Chief Minister said, as reported by Amarujala, that the new medical colleges will not only offer MBBS education but will also function as centres for specialised healthcare, medical research, and the development of local health infrastructure. He added that the move is expected to increase the number of doctors in the state over the coming years and reduce the need for patients to travel to bigger cities for better treatment.

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their support, stating that the Centre's cooperation has played an important role in strengthening Chhattisgarh's health infrastructure.

With the addition of these five government medical colleges, the state is expected to significantly expand its medical education capacity while improving healthcare access in several underserved districts.

Before this approval, Chhattisgarh had 15 medical colleges - 10 government and 5 private institutions offering a total of 2,330 MBBS seats. With the NMC clearing five new government medical colleges with 50 seats each, the state's MBBS intake will increase to 2,580 seats from the 2026-27 academic session.
