NMC Grants Approval to Kilpauk Medical College for Five Years

Chennai: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted Kilpauk Medical College approval for the MBBS course for five years.

The NMC granted five-year approval for 150 MBBS seats after evaluating an assessment report of the medical college and while considering the request to extend the approval.

Founded in 1960, Government Kilpauk Medical College is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai. Even though initially the college was given recognition for 100 MBBS seats, later permission was granted for 150 MBBS seats.

Earlier this month, NMC issued approval for 150 MBBS seats at Government Kilpauk Medical College. However, Medical Dialogues had reported that the Apex medical commission had granted the approval for only one year.

Due to the one-year approval from NMC, it was necessary for the institute to apply for NMC approval again next year for admitting MBBS students.

As per the latest media report by The New Indian Express, now, NMC has extended the approval for the MBBS course for five years. Communicating this to the college on Tuesday, NMC said, “The recognition so being granted, herein, shall be valid for a maximum period of five years from the date of issue, upon which it shall have to be renewed.”

While commenting on the matter, an official of the KMC told the daily, "Our request to extend the approval from one year to five years was granted immediately after an assessment report was taken into consideration."

NMC has also granted a five-year extension to Stanley Government Medical College Hospital and Dharmapuri Medical College to conduct MBBS courses. However, nod for Tiruchy Medical College is still pending.

Meanwhile, the State is waiting for the response from the Union Health Ministry to announce counselling dates as the Ministry has proposed simultaneous counselling for MBBS and BDS courses. However, there will be no common counselling this year.

Dr. R Muthuselvan, the Secretary of the Selection Committee informed the Daily that on the first day of the online sale of applications for MBBS and BDS courses on Wednesday, around 4,000 students registered for the courses till the evening.

There will be offline counselling for 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students and for special quota seats. For the general quota seats, online counselling will be conducted.
