NMC grants permission to Bongaigaon medical college in Assam, to offer 100 MBBS seats
Gauhati: In a major boost to medical education in the state, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission for the establishment of Bongaigaon Medical College in Assam.
The Letter of Permission, issued by the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on August 31, 2026, was issued in compliance with the decision of the Second Appeal Committee.
Before this approval, Assam had 14 medical colleges offering a combined 1,825 MBBS seats annually. The addition of the new medical college increases the state's medical college count to 15 and raises the total annual MBBS intake to 1,925 seats.
Sharing the letter on social media platform X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called it another significant milestone in the journey to transform Assam into a major hub of medical education.
Letter of Permission
According to the NMC letter shared by the Chief Minister, an online application was submitted for the establishment of Bongaigaon Medical College, Bongaigaon, Assam, with an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats. The application was considered under the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the relevant regulations related to the establishment of medical institutions.
The NMC letter refers to a Letter of Disapproval (LoD) dated August 17, 2026, as well as a First Appeal Order dated July 23, 2026. Following this, the Second Appeal Committee reviewed the application and recommended approval.
Subsequently, MARB issued the formal Letter of Permission on August 31, 2026, allowing the new medical college to admit 100 MBBS students for the 2026-27 academic year.
Himanta's reaction
Sharing the official permission letter on X, Chief Minister Sarma congratulated everyone involved in the process and described the development as another major step towards building a “Swasthya Assam.”
"Here's the official Letter of Permission for the establishment of Assam's 15th Medical College in Bongaigaon with an intake of 100 students," Sarma said in the post.
He said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formally approved the medical college to admit 100 MBBS students.
"With this, Bongaigaon Medical College becomes Assam’s 15th medical college, taking our total MBBS seats to 1,925," the Chief Minister.
Sarma also thanked Union Health Minister J P Nadda for his support in granting the approval and said the development would further strengthen Assam’s position as a hub for medical education.
