Mysuru: Aiming at increasing the intake capacity of MBBS students by another 100 seats, the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) has already sent a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC).

In fact, a delegation from NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body has already inspected the institute and reviewed its infrastructure, adds the Hindu. With permission from NMC, the MBBS seats in MMCRI are expected to go up by 100 in June next year.

Currently, MMCRI, one of the oldest medical institutions in the country, has permission to admit MBBS students in its 150 seats.

The erstwhile apex medical body, Medical Council of India (MCI) had denied increasing the intake of MBBS seats on the ground that the institute didn't have bigger classroom for accommodating 250 students together.

Besides, the teaching hospital associated with the medical college, K.R. Hospital had less than 3000 outpatients on everyday basis. The drop in the OPD number was caused when the Jayadeva Hospital had moved to its new campus on KRS Road from K.R. Hospital premises. As a result, the outpatients of the Jayadeva Hospital were added to the hospitals' outpatients' list.

However, after NMC took over, the guidelines for increasing MBBS seats have been revised and now MMCRI is hopeful for getting NMC's nod for the approval of 250 MBBS seats considering the fact that now the hospitals attached to the medical college are attending nearly 2,300 outpatients on a daily basis.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, with an aim of getting an additional 100 MBBS seats, the institute has taken up various works including construction of two new boys and girls hostels and a lecture complex with each of the classrooms having the capacity to accommodate 300 students. The institute also has an examination hall which can accommodate 500 students.

While commenting on the matter, MMCRI Dean and Director C.P. Nanjaraj told The Hindu, "We are confident of getting the NMC nod as whatever is required for increasing the intake is being done. The new hostels, lecture halls and other necessary infrastructure is being developed. Some facilities will be ready by December-end and a few others in January and by April before the next year's admissions commence."

He further informed the daily two new hostels are being built up on the campus of PKTB Hospital on KRS Road. These hostels have 150 rooms each and the ground plus give floor buildings are able to accommodate 900 students.

The daily further adds that the rooms in the new hostels have attached restrooms and better facilities so that three students can comfortably share one room. There is no provision for two-sharing as all the rooms are either single or three-sharing.

Dr. Nanjaraj further told the daily after the completion of these new hostels, all the MBBS students will be accommodated in there and the PG students and interns would be moved to the old hostels inside the city.

"We need junior doctors for handling emergencies and therefore they will get accommodation in hostels within the city," he said.

He also mentioned how the new lecture complex is being constructed at the old exhibition building next to the main building of the MMCRI. Besides, the libraries for UG and PG students are also coming up in the same campus.

Giving further update regarding the deadline for completion of construction work, the dean told the daily that the hostels are expected to be completed in January next year, while the lecture hall would be ready for use in December.
