NMC nod to 2nd year MBBS batches at Konni, Idukki Medical Colleges
Thiruvananthapuram: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Kerala, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for the second-year MBBS batch at Konni Government Medical College and Idukki Medical College.
Idukki Medical College had begun its operations during the time of the previous Congress-UDF government with 50 MBBS students at first.
However, the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had cancelled its recognition in the year 2016 during the LDF Government reign as it didn't have any adequate amenities including required number of beds, academic block, staff, and accommodation facilities for students and employees.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that at that time the students admitted to the medical college had been shifted to Alappuzha Medical College.
Back in 2020, MCI Board of Governors secretary-general Dr RK Vats had submitted a letter to the medical college mentioning seven defects and inconsistencies in the administration which included residents (58%), bed occupancy (29.3%), faculty (18%) clinical lab and radiological investigation at the hospital. Finally, last year, NMC gave its nod for 100 MBBS seats at Idukki Medical College.
Similarly, the administration of GMC Konni had been trying to get the NMC nod for the past few years. Back in 2021, the Medical Education Department of Kerala had sought the nod from the Apex medical commission for commencing MBBS admission in GMC Konni. Last year, finally, NMC gave its permission for 100 MBBS seats at GMC Konni.
