NMC recognition to Tinsukia Medical College with 100 MBBS seats

Guwahati: In a major boost to medical education in Assam, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recognised the state's new medical college- Tinsukia Medical College with 100 MBBS seats.
The announcement to this effect was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said, "Assam's Tinsukia Medical College has received official recognition from the National Medical Commission, making it the 13th institute for medical studies in this northeastern state... A total of 100 undergraduate seats have been approved per year."
"Great news for the people of Assam. The National Medical Commission has officially recognized Tinsukia Medical College, approving 100 undergraduate admissions per year. With this, the number of medical colleges in Assam has now risen to 13," Sarma posted on X.
He expressed his gratitude to the medical fraternity of the state for the achievement and also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inaugurating the Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital.
"This milestone marks a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare education and services in our state," the CM added.

In February this year, the state's health minister announced that 8 news medical colleges will be set up in the state within 18 to 30 months.
This year,former Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that there are altogether 704 medical colleges in India with an intake capacity of 1,07,948 MBBS seats of which 1550 seats are in Assam.
In March, the State Cabinet approved amendments to the "The Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam, (Regulation of Admission into 1st year MBBS/BDS courses) Rules, 2017" and ensured two additional seats available for the candidates from the State.
