No MBBS fees beyond approved structure: TN DME directs private medical colleges

Chennai: Reiterating the directions, the Tamil Nadu DME has directed all self-financing medical colleges and state private university medical colleges in the state to strictly adhere to the National Medical Commission's (NMC) guidelines and charge MBBS fees only for the prescribed course duration of four-and-a-half years. The committee has also warned institutions not to collect any fee beyond the amount approved by the state's Fee Fixation Committee.
Issuing an attention notice dated June 23, 2026, the Selection Committee referred to the NMC's public notice dated April 7, 2026, which instructed all medical colleges, institutions, and universities across the country to collect MBBS tuition fees only for the prescribed academic duration of 4 and half years.
Following the NMC's directive, the Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee had already communicated the instructions to all self-financing medical colleges and state private universities on April 8, 2026.
The latest notification further reminded institutions that they must strictly comply with the proceedings of the Committee on Fixation of Fee in Respect of Self-Financing Professional Colleges dated June 12, 2025. It specifically instructed all self-financing medical and dental colleges and state private university medical colleges not to collect any fee other than the amount fixed by the fee fixation committee.
Emphasising strict compliance, the Selection Committee directed all self-financing institutions to adhere to these instructions without fail, warning against any deviation from the prescribed fee norms.
"Following this the Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee has communicated the same to all the Self-Financing Medical Colleges & State Private Universities on 08.04.2026. Further all the Self-Financing Medical & Dental Colleges and State Private University Medical Colleges are instructed to strictly follow the “Proceedings of The Committee on Fixation of Fee in Respect of Self Financing Professional Colleges” dated 12/06/2025 and shall not collect any other fee other than what is fixed by the committee. All Self Financing institutions are instructed to strictly adhere to the above instructions without fail," the notice read.
Earlier, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME), Tamil Nadu, circulated the National Medical Commission's (NMC) recent clarification directing medical colleges and universities not to charge MBBS course fees for 5.5 years.
Sharing the NMC's public notice with medical institutions in the State, the DME informed stakeholders that MBBS fees should be collected only for the prescribed academic duration of 4.5 years, which involves academic teaching and not for the one-year Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).
