PGIMER Bhubaneswar to start six new PG medical courses with 18 seats
Bhubaneswar: Bringing good news to the Postgraduate medical aspirants in Odisha, six new PG medical courses are going start at Bhubaneswar-based Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research and Capital Hospital.
These new PG medical courses will be added in the six new departments including pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, forensic medicine and toxicology (FMT), anaesthesia and ophthalmology. Three PG seats will be added in each of these departments.
"We can start these courses after getting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC)," the director of the institute, Nibedita Pani informed TOI.
Currently, PGIMER Bhubaneswar offers PG medical courses in obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) with an intake capacity of five sats, Paediatrics with an intake for four seats. Apart from this, Medicine and surgery department, respiratory medicine, and orthopaedics department have four, three and two seats respectively.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in the first phase, NMC has approved opening six departments at the institute from the academic session 2022-2023 with the admission of 24 postgraduate students. Studies had commenced in six PG courses including general surgery, medicine, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology, pulmonary medicine, and Pediatrics.
Last year, while inaugurating the new institute at the Capital Hospital, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had opined that the institute would play a significant role in providing quality education and expert healthcare to people in the state.

Speaking about the commencement of new PG courses, the director of the institute informed the Times of India that admission for PG courses in the existing departments had started in October and November last year. "Their classes and seminars are under way smoothly. Their one round of internal examination is already over. Digital classrooms or smart classroom facilities have been provided to the students. They are interacting with different teachers and reputed doctors via videoconferencing. We are holding mutual exchange programmes for the benefit of students," she told the
"Our students had visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, while students and teachers from a private medical college had visited us. We are also holding interactions with different colleges. All six departments have smart classroom facilities. Teachers are working very hard to maintain the standard of the institute. We are working in a united manner for the betterment of the students, patients and institute," she added.
She further informed the daily that the institute has started research along with teaching and during a meeting of the ethical committee 31 research papers had been selected.
"Students and teachers will work on these papers. So far, we have four publications. Our students are very active in treating patients of Capital Hospital apart from study and other work. Students have submitted very good ideas for research projects. We will give them facilities to start their work," she mentioned.
Apart from this, the daily further adds that the director has assured that the construction of a permanent campus for PGIMER, which is being set up on Capital Hospital land, will be completed by January 2024.
The institute is also considering collaboration with the regional office of WHO in India on a research project. In order to discuss about this research project regarding the growth of children a team will visit the institute, said the PGIMER director.
