Pithoragarh Medical College gets NMC nod for 50 MBBS seats for 2026-27

Dehradun: In a recent development that will expand medical education opportunities in Uttarakhand, Pithoragarh Medical College will begin its first admission process for the 2026-27 academic year with 50 MBBS seats after receiving approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The Apex Medical Commission has issued the order granting approval for 50 MBBS seats at the newly established Government Medical College in Pithoragarh. The admission process is expected to begin soon.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Uttarakhand was set to get 200 new MBBS seats from the 2026-27 academic session with the proposed opening of two new medical colleges in Pithoragarh and Rudrapur. The state government initially proposed 100 MBBS seats each for the two colleges. After completion of construction work, the Medical Education Department approached the NMC seeking permission to start the MBBS courses.

Following the proposal, an NMC inspection team visited both colleges to assess their facilities and infrastructure. During the inspection, the commission found deficiencies at both institutions and did not grant permission to start the MBBS course at that stage.
The state government subsequently took steps to address the deficiencies and submitted a fresh appeal to the NMC. After considering the appeal and hearing the state's case, the commission granted approval for 50 MBBS seats at Pithoragarh Medical College.
According to a latest report by Amarujala, Health Minister Subodh Uniyal welcomed the approval and said the state government is also making efforts to secure approval for Rudrapur Medical College so that it can begin functioning in the current academic session.
Uttarakhand currently has 1,525 MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges, as per the latest seat matrix released by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC.
