Prepare Action Plan to Provide all Amenities at GMCs: Telangana CM Orders after NMC Show Cause
Hyderabad: After getting the show-cause notice from the National Medical Commission (NMC), highlighting inadequate infrastructure at 26 government medical colleges across the State, the Chief Minister of Telangana A. Revanth Reddy has directed the Health Department officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to provide all the amenities to the GMCs across Telangana to ensure their functioning.
The Hindu has reported that CM Reddy has issued instructions to the Health Department officials to set up an official committee in this direction to study the situation in each of these medical colleges, identify their needs, works of immediate importance, requirement of funds, and help from the Government. The Committee has been instructed to submit a report in this regard.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC recently issued show-cause notices to 26 government medical colleges in Telangana for deficiencies in academic and administrative infrastructure.
Issuing the show-cause notice, the Apex Medical Commission highlighted deficiencies in infrastructure, clinical materials, and teaching personnel. NMC took note of these deficiencies during its routine annual assessment of medical institutes across the country.
There are altogether 34 government medical colleges in Telangana. Out of these, 26 medical colleges have received an NMC Show Cause. The only exceptions are Gandhi Medical College, Osmania Medical College, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Adilabad, Government Medical College Nizamabad, Government Medical College Maheshwaram, Government Medical College Yadadri, and Government Medical College Vikarabad.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the Chief Minister of Telangana reviewed the functioning of the Health Department in Hyderabad on Monday i.e. June 16, and discussed about the issues highlighted by NMC. He also issued directions to the concerned officials to submit a report on the status of appointments in government medical colleges, promotions to teaching staff, enhancement of bed strength in the teaching hospitals, filling vacant posts and related issues. He also assured that the State Government would take steps to immediately release funds pending to the medical colleges.
CM Reddy wanted that the officials inform the Government about issues regarding the release of funds and the permissions from the Central Government- so that he could take up the matter with the Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and concerned officials for their resolution.
He also wanted that the officials examine the possibility of including Japanese language as an option subject in nursing courses considering the heavy demand for nursing staff from the State in Japan. In fact, the Japan Government had evinced keen interest to extend cooperation to Telangana for this.
The Chief Minister also favored development of an application that would record details of the patients visiting the government hospitals, details of treating doctors and the timings of the respective hospitals.
Highlighting the importance of Health and Education Departments, CM Reddy directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to review the functioning of the two departments in the third week of every month.
