Ragging at BRD Medical College! MBBS student allegedly Brutally assaulted over haircut demand by seniors
Gorakhpur: In another shocking instance of ragging, a group of senior medical students of the city's Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College have been accused of brutally assaulting a first-year student leaving him with head injuries after he refused to comply with their demand to cut his hair. The student is currently under medical treatment and his condition is reported to be stable.
According to media reports, the alleged act by senior students to force junior students into cutting their hair took a violent turn for one first-year student, who refused to comply. While most of the first-year students complied with the unnecessary demand, this student chose to keep his hair intact and avoided getting it cut as his brother’s wedding was near the corner. Following this, the seniors reportedly assaulted him on campus.
In response, the institute's anti-ragging committee initiated a probe into the incident following verbal reports from the guard and students. Appropriate action will be taken against the accused students if found guilty of ragging the junior student.
As per HT news report, the incident occurred on Thursday evening when a group of senior students confronted the junior, questioning him for not following their directive to cut his hair, claiming that most first-year students had complied. In response, the student explained that he had chosen to keep his hair uncut due to his brother’s upcoming wedding after Holi.
Following this, the senior reportedly surrounded him and then began allegedly brutally assaulting him. A cycle stand guard who witnessed the incident immediately alerted police post officials who quickly arrived at the scene and prevented the situation from escalating further. The police officials then rushed the injured student to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital at BRD Medical College where doctors immediately started his treatment.
The guard who was the prime witness of the incident later informed the anti-ragging cell of the institute backed by reports from the students as well. Presently, the committee is investigating the case and further action will be taken based on the inquiry’s findings.
Speaking to HT in this regard, Professor Ram Kumar Jaiswal, Principal of BRD Medical College said, "the anti-ragging committee has initiated an inquiry following verbal reports from the guard and students. Strict action would be taken against those found guilty."
Further, Circle Officer (CO) Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that while the police have not yet received a written complaint, they are aware that a scuffle occurred.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that 7 second-year MBBS students of BRD Medical College were suspended for three months for allegedly entering the junior students’ hostel without permission violating anti-ragging protocols. Although no concrete evidence of ragging was found, the college administration suspended them for violating hostel rules. They claimed that any unauthorized entry of senior students into the juniors’ hostel is a serious violation of discipline.
