Ragging at Rajiv Gandhi Medical College: 9 medical students suspended for a year

Thane: Taking action against nine students of Rajiv Gandhi Medical College found guilty of ragging their juniors, the Thane Municipal Commissioner has suspended them for one academic year. Those students were also evicted from the college hostel as punishment.
The action was taken against the students after the Anti-Ragging Committee of the medical college conducted an inquiry into the matter on the basis of a complaint.
Confirming the action taken, the medical college, which is run by the Thane Municipal Corporation, issued an official release on Wednesday. In the release, the college informed that Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bhangar took the action on the basis of the inquiry report of the Anti-Ragging Committee.
The release mentioned that the Thane municipal commissioner has suspended nine students of the Rajiv Gandhi Medical College here for ragging freshers at the college’s hostel. The action was taken following a complaint and as per the Prevention of Ragging Rules, it said.
The University Grants Commission had received a complaint about ragging at the college hostel in September. The UGC then directed the college management to take action on it, adds PTI.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the Dean of the medical college Dr. Rakesh Barot informed that an email was sent to the UGC, Delhi early last month mentioning the alleged ragging in the college hostel located at Manpada Ghodbunder Road.
Later, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) contacted the RGMC Dean and sought a probe. Following this, a team comprising members from the Anti-Ragging Committee of the medical college conducted a probe into the matter and the report confirmed the incident.
Confirming the suspension of those nine students, who were found guilty, Civic Commissioner Abhijit Bangar further mentioned that stern action will prove to be a deterrent for other students.
