Ragging at Doon Medical College: Intern suspended, fined Rs 10k for allegedly assaulting junior, 7 senior students barred from classes
Dehradun: In response to a complaint filed by the parents of a junior medical student at Government Doon Medical College Hospital accusing an intern doctor and some senior students of allegedly ragging and beating him in the hostel, the college authorities have suspended the doctor for three months in connection with the case.
He has also been expelled permanently from the college hostel and fined Rs 10,000 for the offence, the principal of the medical college, Ashutosh Sayana, said on Tuesday. Seven other senior students involved in the assault have also been ousted from the hostel and debarred from attending classes and practicals during the session.
The penal action against the intern doctor was taken on Monday in accordance with the recommendation of a disciplinary committee that investigated the matter and submitted its report to the college administration on Monday, he said.
''No one will be allowed to vitiate the academic atmosphere of the medical college. Whoever dares do that will be taken to task,'' Sayana said.
According to a complaint lodged by the parents of the victim, their son was slapped multiple times by the intern doctor and some senior students at his hostel on Saturday night.
A senior doctor, requesting anonymity, said, "The junior student was slapped multiple times and is now suffering from mental trauma. We are counselling him and are in touch with his parents."
Dr Sayana informed TOI, "The intern doctor has given a written apology to the parents of the junior student while the parents have sought for their son's safety. The recommendations of the panel are being studied."
The committee is also probing the matter further to identify if more victims were allegedly ragged and slapped by the accused and the seniors.
