Sangrur Medical college to be named as Sant Baba Attar Singh State Institute of Medical Sciences
Sangrur: The new medical college coming up in the Sangrur district will be known as Sant Baba Attar Singh State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mastuana Sahib.
Preparations have been going to offer 100 MBBS seats at the college.
The Punjab government has taken the decision to name the new college honouring the famous Sant Baba Attar Singh. Recently a meeting was held for the board of management of the college under the chairmanship of chief minister Bhagwant Mann and it the name of the college was decided during the meeting.
CM Mann paid a visit to Sangrur on May 21 when he directed the department officials to ensure preparations to start classes of the first MBBS batch from the next academic session. The medical education and research department is also considering allowing 100 MBBS seats for the college.
Previously Medical Dialogues reported that a few months ago Hussan Lal, principal secretary of medical education and research and deputy commissioner, and other senior officials had a meeting where they discussed the establishment of a new medical college in Sangrur. The new medical college will be established with full government funding.
One of the officials told Hindustan Times that the college has been planned on 25 acres of land and a budget of ₹345.15 crores has been granted for the construction of the college. The 330-bed district hospital, which will be affiliated to the medical college, will also be taken over from the health and family welfare department. "The district hospital will be upgraded to 460 beds in the coming two years," he said.
The Sant Baba Attar Singh State Institute of Medical Sciences Society has been established in order to take care of the whole process of running the college. The department of medical education and research will soon transfer assets of the medical college and hospital to the Society. Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot will be responsible for recruiting the required number of new staff.
Hussan Lal, principal secretary, medical education and research, said: "These are proposals as of now. We have just finalised land for establishing the college. First, we will construct a building, and later we will send the proposal to the National Medical Commission (NHC) for approval."
