Satna's Medical College MBBS students protest demanding basic facilities, cite violation of NMC guidelines

Satna: Highlighting poor and inadequate infrastructure, the medical students of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College, Satna, staged a protest alleging that the lack of basic facilities is affecting their education.

In a memorandum to the district collector, the students cited violation of NMC guidelines and pointed out serious gaps in essential facilities, which include no transportation to the hospital where they have daily clinical duties, no demonstration rooms for practical teaching, inadequate operation theatres, and poor sanitation on campus.

Since the college has no attached hospital, students are sent to other district hospitals for postings, but face many difficulties due to these gaps. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, the administration has failed to address the issues, leaving them with no option but to raise their concerns through protest.

"Stop lying and fulfil our request" was the slogan of the protesting students holding placards that read, "Learning should not suffer", "Provide basic facilities", etc.

One of the students said, “We are the first batch here, and our juniors are also studying. As per NMC rules, a medical college must have its own hospital, but we don’t. Our clinical postings happen at district hospitals located about 8 km away, and the college has not provided any transportation, which is against NMC guidelines.”

The main issues raised by the students included:

• No transportation to hospital: As per NMC guidelines, a college must have its own hospital or provide transport if it is off-campus. Students said the lack of transportation makes daily clinical postings difficult.
• No demonstration rooms: Shortage of demo rooms in the hospital hampers practical and clinical teaching.
• Inadequate operation theatres: Limited OT facilities affect student training and patient care.
• Poor sanitation: Insufficient and unclean washrooms; female students lack proper menstrual hygiene facilities.
