Tanda Medical College MBBS intern expelled, fined Rs 1.8 lakh for attacking junior with knife

Kangra: A shocking case of alleged ragging unfolded at Dr Rajendra Prashad Medical College, Tanda where a junior medical student was allegedly attacked with a knife by an intern medical student on the eve of Holi. Based on the disciplinary committee recommendation, the college administration expelled the intern for 18 months and fined him Rs. 1.8 lakh.
As per the latest UNI news agency report, the alleged attack caused minor injuries to the junior. Even though he escaped deep wounds, he experienced severe bleeding. The jacket that the junior was wearing was torn by the accused knife during the attack, making it a key piece of evidence in the case.
Dr Milap Sharma, Principal of DRPGM College Tanda, told UNI that the accused was an intern of the 2019 MBBS batch, who allegedly attacked an MBBS 2022 batch student on the eve of Holi in the college ground where the festival was being celebrated.
Dr Sharma confirmed the action to Tribune stating it was based on the anti-ragging committee's report. The committee investigated complaints and found that a junior student was harassed and beaten by seniors during Holi. Following the committee's recommendation, the college administration took strict action, imposing both suspension and a fine on the offender. The move aims to curb ragging and ensure a safer environment for students.

After the college administration learned about the incident, they informed the police and sent the matter to the Disciplinary Committee. The committee, led by Dr Manish Saroch, Head of the ENT department, submitted its report on Monday.
A thorough investigation by the committee found the intern guilty of his actions and accordingly recommended his expulsion from the college for 18 months. Beside this, the committee also recommended the college to impose a fine of Rs 1.8 lakh on him. The student has been asked to deposit the amount in 7 days.
Meanwhile, Kangra Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ankit Sharma confirmed that the victim declined a medical examination and was not interested in pursuing police action. He provided a written statement accepting the college disciplinary committee’s decision as final.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported that a female doctor at a community health centre in Kallara Tharatta was allegedly attacked by a drunk patient and his attendant with a pair of scissors attempting to stab her. Luckily, the doctor sustained no injuries but was reportedly abused and threatened by them. The police acting swiftly arrested the duo the same day.
