Telangana Private Medical College MBBS interns Protest Demanding Equal Stipend

Hyderabad: MBBS interns at several private medical colleges in Telangana are on a protest demanding equal stipend as per the National Medical Commission norms and the Telangana Government Orders.

House Surgeons of Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Vikarabad, have been on protest since Monday. They have boycotted all the duties, including the emergency duties, demanding a payment of stipend as per the Government Order No. 59 dated 27.05.2023.

Similarly, interns and postgraduate students of Mediciti, and Dr. Patnam Mahender Reddy Medical College are also continuing with their protest.

In the Government Order No. 107 dated 28.07.2023, for the PG medical and dental students at the private institutes, the Government had specified, "The management shall pay stipend to the students on par with government institutions as per national medical commission regulations."

For the MBBS interns as well, a similar order was issued on 27.05.2025, under which, the house surgeons in Telangana private medical colleges should be paid at par with the government medical colleges- approximately Rs 25,906 per month.

Despite this, the intern doctors at Mahavir Institutes of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Vikarabad do not get any stipend from the college management. One of the medico, who has been on protest since Monday, informed that their senior batches also did not get any stipend during their internship.

The strike by the MIMS house surgeons entered its fourth day on Thursday. Yesterday, a meeting was held in the morning under the Chairmanship of Dean Dr. I.B. Raju. In the meeting, the house surgeons were directed to open accounts in bank and the management also informed that the stipend amount would be decided by next Monday, as per the payment in other private medical colleges, and thereafter, the stipend amount will be deposited in the accounts of the medicos within a week.

However, when the medicos asked whether the stipend payment would be as per the NMC guidelines and Telangana Government G.O. No. 59 dated 27/05/2023, there was no clear answer from the founders.

The house surgeons have made it clear that they will not resume duty until the stipend amount is officially clarified. They are requesting the Telangana State Government and the National Medical Commission (NMC) to intervene immediately and provide a quick solution to this problem.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues in this regard, a medico from MIMS said, "On 29th of May, we had a meeting with the Director. Back then, they had asked for one week of time. On 4th June, we met with the Accounts Department. They said that we will give you Rs 2,000 per month." The medico further added that this amount was also not confirmed as the authorities sought more time from the students to provide any clarity.

"We have been on protest since Monday and we have boycotted all kinds of services, including the Emergency," added the student.

According to the medico, before the protest also, the authorities had informed that the students would receive stipend. However, they had not clarified about the amount.

"We will resume our duties only after getting clarity about the amount of stipend," clarified the medico, adding that the Senior batches did not get any stipend during their internship.
