Tirunelveli: The Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital received a new oxygen plant on Thursday, 11th November 2021. The new oxygen supply plant has the capacity to generate 600 litres of medical grade oxygen per minute.
The oxygen plant was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu speaker M Appavu and Industries minister Thangam Thennarasu was also present during the inauguration ceremony.
The oxygen plant is targeted at benefitting the patients of the fertility and paediatric wards. The plant will cater to the needs of 15,000 patients annually. Installation of the oxygen generator commenced on September 10 and was completed on Tuesday. An oxygen tank with a capacity of 2,000 litres to store surplus oxygen was also opened on the TVMCH premises along with the oxygen generation plant.
Parts of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts as well as Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts were severely crippled during the COVID-19 pandemic and experienced severe oxygen deficit. There was an increase in the demand for oxygenated beds.
Hospital authorities said that it was a tight rope walk when oxygen availability in the hospital's tank depleted, reports TOI
