Tragic: Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences MBBS student falls to death from hostel building
Kochi: In a tragic incident, a second-year MBBS student at the Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences in Chalakka lost her life after accidentally falling from the seventh floor of the hostel building.
The police report states that the student, Fathimath Shahana, was sitting on the protective grill of a duct on the seventh floor of the girls' hostel when she lost her balance and fell through the duct to the first floor, accidentally slipping through a gap between the corridor and the wall on the seventh floor of the building.

The incident occurred at 11 pm on Saturday when the student was sitting on the protection grill of a duct and was using her mobile phone. After she fell from the building, the student passed away within 3 hours. According to the FIR report, she fell from the building at 11 pm and died at 2 am.
Following this, she was immediately taken to Aster Medcity but the doctor declared her dead moments later. To determine the exact cause of her death, the police registered a case and an investigation was launched.
"It is understood that she was sitting on the protection grill of a duct on the seventh floor of the girls' hostel using her mobile phone when she slipped and fell through the duct to the first floor around 11.15pm on Jan 4. She was immediately brought to our emergency department and stabilized. She was shifted to Aster Medcity, Kochi. We regret to inform that in spite of all our sincere and best efforts, her life could not be saved," said the FIR as quoted by TOI.
Meanwhile, the police stated that there was no indication of foul play, as their investigation revealed no suspicious activities. Consequently, they have concluded that her death was not a mystery but rather an accident.
As per a Kaumudi online news report, the FIR also stated that the fire safety systems nearby were concealed with gypsum board. Therefore, it is believed that she accidentally fell after breaking the gypsum board while sitting on the protective grill.
The police also noted that the corridor sides on the seventh floor of the hostel were unsafe. As a result, an investigation is underway to check the safety system at the medical college.
