Uproar at IGIMS Patna: Medicos protest after MBBS student allegedly denied bed at institute dies

Patna: Medicos at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, are protesting over the death of a fellow MBBS student, who allegedly did not get a bed at the institute after being injured in a road accident.
On April 7, the student was initially brought to the IGIMS after he got injured in the accident. However, he was not admitted to the hospital, citing lack of beds. Thereafter, he was taken to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.
This led to an uproar among the medical students, who sat on a dharna outside the Director's office.

As per the latest media report by Live Hindustan, the protesting students have accused the institute of giving beds on brokerage and lobbying. They also claimed that they were not even provided with an ambulance.
Considering the tense situation, a large number of police forces have been deployed at the institute. The SDM is also reportedly camping on the spot.
Dr. Manikant Singh informed Dainik Bhaskar that on April 7, the medical student, who was in the second year of the MBBS course, was injured in a road accident near Hattali Mor. The bike collided with the divider. He informed that they took the injured to IGIMS, where the hospital administration allegedly refused to give them a bed. After this, he was admitted to Paras Hospital.
"After the death, they approached the director late at night to provide an ambulance so that the dead body could be sent home. Director Prof. Dr. Binde Kumar started speaking rudely. He said how dare you people come here. He called the SDM and the police to the campus," Dr. Singh told the Daily.
The students sitting on the protest informed, "The hospital administration is saying that the bed is not vacant since 2 days. You first show the register. Our own people will not get beds. People from all over Bihar come here with faith and students studying in IGIMS go to Paras. The most irresponsible act is of the director. If justice is done, we will protest."
Further, the students informed that when they demanded money from the Director to deposit the fees for the private hospital, the Director allegedly refused to talk.
As per the Live Hindustan report, the gate of the director's bungalow and the window glass were broken by the students. A large number of police force had reached the spot under the leadership of SDM. Director Professor Binde Kumar did not come out of the house and said that the talk would be held in the office itself.
The protesting students, who have been sitting on protest outside the Director's residence since 2.30 am, alleged that the hospital has become a den of brokers and the beds become available only after lobbying. They have also demanded the resignation of the Director.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported about a controversy at IGIMS Patna, where, in violation of existing norms, a medical professor was allegedly made faculty in-charge of the medical college. Highlighting this, the principal of the institute recently wrote to the State Health Department and alleged that due to the "humiliation and torture", he has been facing depression, which is getting "so acute and intense" that he "sometimes feel to kick the bucket by committing suicide”.
