NBE makes Basic course in biomedical research mandatory for DNB, DrNB trainees
New Delhi: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced the mandatory implementation of the Basic Course in Biomedical Research (BCBR) for all DNB and DrNB trainees admitted from the 2025 session onwards, in line with directives of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
As per the official notice issued by the NBE in this regard, all DNB and DrNB trainees from the 2025 admission batch onwards will be required to successfully complete the BCBR course as part of their training. The move aims to ensure uniform standards in postgraduate medical education across India.
The course has been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai, and focuses on research methodology and biomedical ethics.
The BCBR is a self-paced online programme, available throughout the year via the SWAYAM platform and ICMR–NIE website.
The course comprises 25 lectures accompanied by assignments, of which candidates are required to secure a minimum of 50% marks in the first 23 assignments to become eligible to appear for the final examination.
The assessment consists of an online proctored examination comprising 100 multiple-choice questions, with a minimum qualifying score of 50%.
Therefore, all DNB and DrNB trainees admitted from the 2025 admission batch onwards shall be required to complete the course prior to submission of their thesis, if not completed earlier. Submission of the official e-certificate issued by ICMR–NIE shall be mandatory for eligibility to appear in the Final Theory Examination.
Upon successful completion, an e-Certificate is awarded by NPTEL/SWAYAM. The course is offered free of cost; however, candidates are required to pay a nominal examination fee for appearing in the proctored assessment.
Further, the Basic Course in Biomedical Research (BCBR) certification has also been made mandatory for faculty members at NBEMS-accredited institutions. However, a relaxation period of three (03) years shall be granted to existing faculty to complete the course.
The implementation of the BCBR is expected to strengthen ethical competence and research capabilities among trainees, enhance the quality of dissertations, mitigate potential regulatory risks, and foster greater public confidence in the clinical research conducted by NBEMS trainees.
