New Delhi- The application form for NEET UG 2024 was released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on 9 February 2024 and the registration process will continue till March 9 2024. This year, significant changes have been introduced in the NEET UG application procedure and new features have also been included in the exam pattern.

Here are some key changes that aspirants should know before applying and appearing for the NEET UG 2024.

Revised application fees

The fee structure for the application form in NEET UG 2024 has also been updated. This year, the registration fee for the general category and NRI has been increased to Rs 1,700. Meanwhile, applicants from EWS/OBC-NCL categories will now have to pay Rs 1,600, and for SC/ST/PWD/Third Gender categories, the new fee is Rs 1,000.

Revision of tie-breaking policy

Updates have also been made to the tie-breaking policy for NEET 2024. The changes pertain only to the fourth criterion, while the first three remain unchanged. The criteria will be based on the marks attained by the candidate in Biology (Botany & Zoology), Chemistry, and Physics, respectively.

  1. Candidate obtaining higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
  2. Candidate obtaining higher marks in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
  3. Candidate obtaining higher marks in Physics in the Test, followed by,
  4. Draw of lots by using the computer or IT with no human intervention.

Last year, apart from the first three criteria, comparison of the proportion of correct responses in each of the three subjects was also considered.

Reduction and addition in NEET 2024 Syllabus

The NEET 2024 syllabus has been revised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and NTA, which has already been released. As per the latest NEET syllabus 2024, many subjects have been removed from the three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology and some subjects have been added in each subject which are essential for the test.

As per the syllabus, which has been published by NTA as well, the questions from Physics will come from 20 Units including Physics and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Oscillations and Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices, Experimental Skills,

The syllabus of Chemistry has been divided into three parts - Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. There are a total number of 20 Units covering these three parts of Chemistry Syllabus. The Units covering Physical Chemistry include- Some basic concepts in Chemistry, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics.

The Units covering the syllabus of Inorganic Chemistry Include- Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, p- Block Elements, d- and f- Block Elements, Co-Ordination Compounds. Apart from these, the syllabus of Organic Chemistry has been covered in the Units including Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds, Some basic principles of Organic Chemistry, Hydrocarbons, Organic Compounds Containing Halogens, Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, Biomolecules, and Principles Related to Practical Chemistry.

In respect of the Biology Syllabus, there are a total number of 10 Units that cover topics including- Diversity in Living World, Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants, Cell Structure and Function, Plant Physiology, Human Physiology, Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology and Human Welfare, Biotechnology and its Application, and Ecology and Environment.

Exam Duration and variations in the pattern

The duration of the test has been extended to 200 minutes i.e. 3 hours 20 minutes from 2 pm to 5:20 pm. As per the exam structure, there are a total of 720 marks, with each question carrying 4 marks. Meanwhile, each subject has total 50 questions divided into 2 sections i.e. Section A and B. Section A contains 35 questions, while Section B contains 15 questions, from which candidates can choose to answer any 10.

Eligibility Criteria

Generally, only students who had Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology as their primary subjects were deemed eligible for NEET. However, this year, those who have these subjects as additional papers are also eligible for NEET 2024. Additionally, individuals who have completed or are currently enrolled in Class 12 or equivalent exams through the National Institute of Open Schools (NIOS) are also eligible for NEET 2024.

Below is the list of documents that have to be uploaded to NTA NEET-

1 Scanned passport photograph

2 Scanned postcard-size photograph

3 Scanned signature

4 Scanned left and right-hand fingers and thumb impressions

5 PWBD Certificate (if applicable)

6 Citizenship Certificate (if applicable, for NRI/PIO/OCI candidates)

Below is the list of documents that are not required to be uploaded-

1 Class 10 Pass Certificate

2 Permanent and Present Address Proof

3 Category Certificate (for Reserved category candidates)

Website Change

Till the last year, the official website for NTA NEET was www.neet.nta.nic.in. However, this year, it has been updated to neet.ntaonline.in. Henceforth, candidates are advised to refer to the new official website for all NEET-related information.
