NMC approves 4 DM, 8 MD seats at 2 Medical Colleges in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram- Recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a total of 12 MD and DM seats at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and Alappuzha Medical College. Of these, 8 PG speciality (MD) and 2 super speciality (DM) seats have been approved.
This announcement was recently made through a statement by Health Minister Veena George, “The seats are: Thiruvananthapuram Medical College - two seats for paediatric nephrology DM, two seats for pulmonary medicine DM, six seats for anaesthesia MD; Alappuzha Medical College - two seats for psychiatry MD”, the statement said.
According to Onmanorama report, With the approval of these seats, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital has become the first government college in the country to have Paediatric Nephrology DM seats sanctioned since Thiruvananthapuram MCH is the only medical college in Kerala to have a Pediatric Nephrology wing. With this, adding these 2 new DM seats is expected to provide a comprehensive upgrade to the wing.
Meanwhile, while speaking to the Onmanorama media, the minister said, "Once these new courses begin, these government hospitals, in addition to deepening research, can provide more skilled services in treatment and teaching. With this, the total number of PG seats sanctioned after this government came to power has risen to 92."
The Minister also said that the DM Pediatric Nephrology course would bring about a paradigm shift in the treatment of kidney diseases in children. “We will now be able to create skilled specialists for the treatment of kidney diseases among children, dialysis and kidney transplant. In the country itself, there is a dearth of doctors in this highly specialised field”, she added.
“The government is taking all steps to begin these courses at the earliest”, the health minister said.
