NMC approves Seven Cardiac Super-Specialty Seats in GMC Kolhapur
Kolhapur: More Postgraduate medicals seats are going to be added to the seat matrix of Maharashtra since the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for seven cardiac super speciality seats to Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College (RCSM GMC), Kolhapur.
The apex medical commission's nod has come for four seats in super-speciality cardiovascular and thorasic surgery and three seats in cardiology medicine for the academic year 2023-2024, adds TOI. Admission to these seats will be done on the basis of the recently held NEET-SS examination.
With this, Kolhapur Government medical college has become the third government run hospital in Maharashtra providing super-speciality training to the postgraduate doctors. Apart from RCSM GMC, the other two hospitals are Mumbai based JJ Medical College and Hospital and the Government Medical College Nagpur.
Founded back in the year 2000, RCSM GMC Kolhapur is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The medical college offers several undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in around 600 seats. Besides, the institute also maintains a nursing school. Its affiliated hospital, Chhatrapati Pramilatai Raje Hospital has altogether 18 wards with a total of 665 beds.

Referring to the NMC nod for seven cardiac super-speciality seats, the assistant professor of the department of cardiology at the medical college, Akshay Bafna told the Times of India, “Currently, the medical college has 14 MD (doctor of medicine) courses and four MS (master of surgery) courses in various faculties. Most of the MD and MS courses will have a capacity of 45 seats. Additionally, the medical college has MBBS courses with an intake capacity of 150 students. All seats are filled through all-India entrance tests and the subsequent centralized admission process rounds,”
“A doctor from G B Pant Medical College was tasked with the work to inspect the cardiac department. Currently, we carry out 100-150 cardiac procedures, sometimes even rare ones. We have a 25-bed facility ready. All the expertise and logistical requirements are available with us, which made it easy for the National Medical Commission to approve the seats,” he added.
While commenting on the matter, the dean of the institute, Pradip Dixit told the daily, “We have had a cardiac department functioning for the past 20 years. Now, we will have postgraduate courses on cardiac surgery and cardiology medicine. Students will be allowed to render their services at the attached Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Civil Hospital. With this, critical heart operations such as open-heart surgeries and other procedures that require surgical expertise can be performed. These will immensely help critical patients from poor backgrounds who cannot afford such surgeries in private hospitals.”
