NMC Extends Deadline for Medical Colleges to submit Contact details of convener of Anti- Ragging Committee
New Delhi: Taking note of the fact that some of the medical colleges had not submitted contact details of convener of Anti-Ragging Committee, the National Medical Commission has extended the deadline for the same.
The Apex medical commission has asked all those colleges who have not submitted the report, to submit the same within 01.12.2022.
Issuing a gentle reminder in this regard, NMC has further warned the medical colleges about possible action as per section 18(5) of the National Medical Commission Regulation 2021 if they fail to submit the report within time.
Writing to the medical colleges on 24.11.2022 NMC stated, "With reference letter No.U-15027/7/2022-UGMEB/046168 dated 12.10.2022, on the subject stated above, there are some colleges which have not submitted contact details of convener of Anti- Ragging Committee and Principal/ Dean/ Directors of Medical College/Institutes. It is therefore, requested that all those colleges which have not submitted the report yet may submit the same (preferably by mail) by 01.12.2022 failing which NMC may take action as per section 18(5) National Medical Commission (Prevention & Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges & Institutions) Regulation 2021. Those colleges who had already submitted their reports are requested to not send them again."

Previously, the Commission on 12.10.2022 had written to the heads of all the medical colleges and asked them to provide the contact details of Convener of Anti-Ragging Committee and Principal/Dean/Directors in a format prescribed by the Commission. At that time, NMC had set the deadline for submission of this data until 18.10.2022. The colleges were asked to submit the name, designation, mobile number and email id of the concerned officials.
However, now NMC has extended the deadline and asked the colleges who did not comply with the earlier directions of the Commission to submit the data within December 1, 2022. The Commission has also warned the colleges about possible action, if they did not act on the NMC order.
Medical Dialogues had last year reported that NMC in the regulations titled "Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021" had specified the disciplinary actions to be taken while dealing with complaints of ragging in the.
Those Regulations had specified the definition of ragging and also the actions that may constitute ragging. NMC had also mentioned about the measures to prohibit and prevent ragging by institutions including the duties and responsibilities of the institutes, measures required to be taken by the medical colleges, issue of migration, transfer or conduct certificates, measures to encourage healthy interaction between freshers and seniors, Sensitisation of institutional employees and staff towards ragging, Institutional committees and related measures, Anti-ragging squad, Student Affairs or Hostel Committee, duties of the universities, etc.
Back in September 2022, NMC had wrote to the Deans/ Principals/ Directors of the Medical institutes and informed them about a dedicated Email ID (antiragging@timc.org.in) using which medical students can directly lodge ragging complaints with the Commission.
Further informing colleges about constitution of an Anti-Ragging Committee, NMC mentioned on 30.09.2022, "National Medical Commission has constituted an Anti- Ragging Committee with Dr. Aruna V. Vanikar, President, UGMEB as the chairperson of the committee. Anti-Ragging Committee in its first meeting held on 27th September 2022, reviewed the ragging complaints received from the Medical Students/Parent's of the Medical Students and has expressed its concerns over incidents of suicide and suicidal tendency among the Medical Students. Although all incidents of suicide and suicidal tendency are not linked to ragging but in many cases incidents of suicide have been linked to ragging."
