Ragging Menace: NMC sets up anti-ragging cell to address complaints from medical colleges
New Delhi: In an attempt to address the instances of ragging in the medical colleges, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has constituted an anti-ragging cell, which will examine and resolve complaints forwarded by anti-ragging committees of different medical colleges.
The cell comprises Dr Aruna V Vanikar, President, Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) as chairperson and Dr Vijayendra Kumar, Member, UGMEB, Dr Vijay Lakshmi Nag, Member, EMRB (Ethics and Medical Registration Board), Dr Yogender Malik, Member, EMRB, Shambhu Sharan Kumar, Director, UG, Ashok Kumar, deputy secretary, NMC, Chaman Lal Guleria, DS, EMRB as members and Aujender Singh, DS, NMC as member-secretary.
Issuing an order in this regard on September 15, NMC the Apex medical education regulatory body has informed that the cell members of this anti-ragging cell shall meet once every month in order to take up the ragging complaints and undertake an independent enquiry, reports PTI.

The Apex commission will receive the complaints of ragging through a special email address. The order further states that either UGMEB or the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) will address the issue, depending on to whom the case is concerned. Thereafter, the concerned board will take necessary action on the recommendations of the cell, the order said.
Medical Dialogues had last year reported that NMC in the regulations titled "Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021" had specified the disciplinary actions to be taken while dealing with complaints of ragging in the.
Those Regulations had specified the definition of ragging and also the actions that may constitute ragging. NMC had also mentioned about the measures to prohibit and prevent ragging by institutions including the duties and responsibilities of the institutes, measures required to be taken by the medical colleges, issue of migration, transfer or conduct certificates, measures to encourage healthy interaction between freshers and seniors, Sensitisation of institutional employees and staff towards ragging, Institutional committees and related measures, Anti-ragging squad, Student Affairs or Hostel Committee, duties of the universities, etc.
