NMC gives permission for 3 MCh Plastic Surgery Seats at GMC Guntur
Amaravati: In a major boost to the Super Speciality medical education in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has allotted three seats in the super speciality wing of plastic surgery department-MCh-stream to the Government Medical College (GMC), Guntur.
The nod from NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body in India comes after the Commission reveiwed the number of surgeries being handled at the Government Hospital affiliated to the medical college.
These newly added three MCh seats will be filled on the basis of the National level counselling under the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) that will be held in September.
Established back in 1946, Guntur Medical College is one of the premiere medical institutions in south India. Affiliated to Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, GMC Guntur offers both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.
Although the Plastic Surgery Department of the Medical College had been introduced around 30 years ago, it was confined to handling a few surgeries only.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the relentless efforts by the team headed by professor Sumitha Shankar has finally resulted in the college getting NMC nod for three MCh seats in the Plastic Surgery Department.
GMC Guntur is the only government medical college in Andhra Pradesh that has three seats in the Plastic Surgery Department. While commenting on this achievement, the Principal of the medical college, Dr. Padmavathi Devi said, "This is really a big achievement. We got PG seats in the plastic surgery department for the first-time in the history of GMC."
The daily adds that the commission considered the number of surgeries being handled at the hospital attached to the medical college before taking the decision of granting three super speciality seats.
Speaking about this, Dr. Sumitha told the daily, "We are handling almost 80-90 surgeries per month, the highest in any department. Plastic surgery department is giving a second life to the victims of mishaps."
