NMC gives permission for 89 new PG medical seats at Andhra Medical College
Visakhapatnam: In a major boost to the postgraduate medical education in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for increasing the PG medical seats at Andhra Medical College by altogether 89 seats so far.
The principal of the medical college Dr G Butchi Raju has confirmed that the permission has so far been accorded for 89 seats including the 46 seats, for which NMC has given permission this month.
Now the NMC has given its nod for four seats in cardiothorasic surgery, three seats in DVL, 11 seats in gynaecology, 6 seats in pathology, 7 seats in physiology, 2 seats in neurology, 7 seats in surgery, and 6 seats in community medicine.
This comes after the assessment conducted by the apex medical commission back in January 2023 for enhancing the PG medical seats at the medical college. Back in January, the Commission had assessed the medical college for 118 seats out of the 131 seats for which the college had applied.

Medical Dialogues had reported back in December 2022 that Central Government had given its nod for 630 PG medical seats in Andhra Pradesh. In case of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, the Central Government had given its nod for 128 additional PG medical seats.
Recently, a 36-member team of NMC visited the college on January 12 to inspect 24 departments. On the basis of the report submitted by the inspection team, the LoI had been issued for increasing 15 additional PG medical seats in four departments in the first phase.
Following this, last month, NMC issued the Letter of Intent for the 15 PG medical seats in four departments after conducting an inspection of the college in respect to a proposal for increasing 131 PG seats in the college.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, this month NMC has given its permission for 46 new PG medical seats in the medical college. With this, altogether 89 PG medical seats have been added to the seat matrix of the medical college.
Commenting on the matter, AMC Principal Dr G Butchi Raju told the daily, "Last month, we received permission for 43 seats. Four new seats have been sanctioned in cardiothoracic surgery. DVL seats have been increased to 10 from the existing seven seats, gynaecology to 37 from the existing 26, pathology to 14 seats from the existing eight, physiology to 12 seats from the existing five, neurology to five from existing three, surgery to 26 from the existing 19, and community medicine to 12 from the existing six."
