NMC issues Letter of Intent to GMCH for 2 DM Interventional Radiology Seats
Nagpur: Bringing good news to the Super Specialty medical aspirants in Maharashtra, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for Doctorate of Medicine (DM) course in Interventional Radiology at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur.
Issuing the Letter of Intent for two DM seats in this branch of Super Specialty, the Commission made it clear that the permission for admitting students for this concerned course has been granted from 2022-2023 academic year. Besides, the Apex medical body has also instructed the Institute to submit the undertaking for issuing the Letter of Permission (LoP).
Although the Institute fulfills all the requirements including the required infrastructure, cathlab, CT Scan, ultra Sonography, MRI etc., it still has to deal with the empty post of Professor. In order to run a DM course, one Professor, one Associate Professor, one Assistant professor and one Senior Resident are required to be present at the college. While GMCH has enough faculties for all the other posts, the Post of Professor is still vacant.
Addressing the same, NMC in its letter directed to the Institute mentioned, "The Commission has decided to obtain undertaking/essential document for issue of Letter of Permission for starting of new course DM (Interventional Radiology) with annual intake of 2 seats for the academic year 2022-23. The authorities need to fill the post of Professors within 3 months."
Doctorate of Medicine (DM) course is a three year Doctorate level degree course that the students pursue after completion of their Postgraduate medical education. The Interventional Radiology Department of GMCH, Nagpur performs around 100-110 procedures on monthly basis.

While commenting on the NMC nod for the super specialty course in Interventional Radiology, the Minister of Medical Education, Girish Mahajan told The Hitavada, "This is a very positive development and I always want it to take place. We will be giving approval to the proposal. Since Dr Rathod has been serving and taken lot of efforts we want him to be there. We will try to issue approval to his professorship within time so that GMCH can send the undertaking to NMC."
The daily further adds that the proposal for elevating the present Head of the Department Dr Jawahar Rathod has also been forwarded to DMER, which is yet to give its approval in this regard.
The initiative for NMC nod in Interventional Radiology commenced during the tenure of Dr Sajal Mitra, who was the Dean back then. It was during the tenure of Dr Mitra that the required amount that needs to be given to NMC was sanctioned and all other infrastructural facilities had been set up at the Institute. The entire process got momentum when Dr Gupta took over as Dean, adds the daily.
With the NMC nod for this new Super Specialty course, now more students will get the opportunity to pursue super specialty medical education and the patients will also get access to specialised treatment.
