NMC nod for 150 MBBS Seats in Vizianagaram Govt Medical College
Visakhapatnam: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its approval for the new government medical college in Vizianagaram.
After inspecting the facilities and infrastructure of the medical college on February 3, apex medical education regulatory body has given permission to the medical colleges for 150 MBBS Seats and the college will start functioning from the next academic year.
In this regard the Apex medical commission has already issued a consent letter and the district officials of Vizianagaram received the letter on February 20, 2023. The admission to these 150 MBBS seats will be made through the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The college is affiliated to the Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.
Altogether Rs 500 crore is being spent for the construction of this new medical college in Gajularega, which will come up in about 70 acres. While the entire area of the college will be around 14 lakh square feet, in the first phase, construction work has begun for an area of 6 lakh square feet.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the officials of the college have informed that already tens of faculty members have been appointed for the college and the District Collector A Surya Kumar has informed that the college will begin operating from the next academic year i.e. 2023-2024.
"A team from the NMC had recently visited Vizianagaram and taken stock of infrastructural facilities, including the faculty, needed to start the college. The construction works of the college are going on at a rapid speed," the District Collector informed the daily.
Meanwhile, the State Minister for Medical and Health, Vidadala Rajini recently issued a statement and mentioned that the State Government has been making efforts for getting permission for four more medical colleges, adds the Hans India.
She further informed that the State Government has proposed setting up 17 new medical colleges at a cost of Rs 8500 crore and among these, the medical college in Vizianagaram received the NMC nod first. The Minister further added that the State will set up four more new medical colleges at Machilipatnam, Eluru, Nandyal and Rajahmundry from this year.
"Government of Andhra Pradesh led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been setting up as many as 17 government medical colleges with Rs 8,500 crore in the state. We have been working to start at least five medical colleges in the coming academic year. As a part of this, NMC has given its nod to Government Medical College Vizianagaram with an annual intake of 150 MBBS seats. I hope we will get a nod for the remaining four colleges in the next couple of months," mentioned the Statement issued by the Minister.
Edex Live adds that GMC Vizianagaram was sanctioned back on May 21, 2021 and its construction work is being done by the Andhra Pradesh Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APSMIDC). While the medical college is still under construction, the district administration has developed a temporary campus at Maha Raja District Hospital.
The temporary campus has all the required buildings along with an outpatient registration room, lecture gallery, operation theatres with modern technology, a 30-bedded NICU, SICU and ICU.
Already the State Heath Department has completed the process of recruiting the principal, professors, specialist doctors and other paramedical staff for the new medical college.
The construction work for the new college at Gajularega is being monitored by the District Collector A Suryakumari, who mentioned, "The construction works of medical college is in full swing. We will complete the works by December 2024. We can start the classes in the temporary campus, which we will use for BSc Nursing later."
