NMC nod to 15 PG medical seats at Andhra Medical College
Visakhapatnam: Bringing good news to the Postgraduate medical aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for increasing 15 PG medical seats for the Andhra Medical College (AMC) in the first phase.
While four seats will be increased each in the orthopaedic & biochemistry departments, six seats will be added in radiology and one in nephrology, adds TNIE.
NMC issued the Letter of Intent for the 15 PG medical seats in four departments after conducting an inspection of the college in respect to a proposal for increasing 131 PG seats in the college.
Medical Dialogues had reported back in December 2022 that Central Government had given its nod for 630 PG medical seats in Andhra Pradesh. In case of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, the Central Government had given its nod for 128 additional PG medical seats.
Recently, a 36-member team of NMC visited the college on January 12 to inspect 24 departments. On the basis of the report submitted by the inspection team, the LoI had been issued for increasing 15 additional PG medical seats in four departments in the first phase.

While commenting on the matter, the principal of the medical college Butchiraju told the New Indian Express, “Additional seats have been given based on strength of the college. We are expecting the LoI for the remaining 120 seats soon.”
“After submission of the undertaking by the government, the NMC will give a Letter of Permission in order to start the admission for the new seats,” he added.
The principal of the medical college added that the NMC inspection was over for 121 seats and the college was expecting a LoI for the remaining proposed seats.
“The admissions for the additional PG seats will be made from the next academic year of 2023-24. There are 237 PG seats in AMC and if all the proposed seats are sanctioned the number will go up to 368,” he explained.
He further informed that after considering the proposal submitted by the State Government for improving the infrastructure at AMC, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 151 crore.
“Of this amount, the Union government share will be 60% and the State’s share will be 40%. The Centre has released Rs 25 crore as first installment, the works are being taken up,” he added.
