NMC nod to four PG medical seats at GMC Kollam

Kollam: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants in Kerala, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for four PG medical seats at Government Medical College, Kollam.

These four seats include two seats each in Community Medicine and Pathology. The confirmation regarding this came from the State Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday, adds The Hindu.

Formerly known as ESIC Medical College, Parippally, GMC Kollam is the first Government medical institute in the district and it commenced MBBS course back in 2017. The first MBBS batch has successfully completed the course with good pass percentage and entered into house surgency.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, now NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body has given its nod for four PG medical seats including two seats in Community Medicine and two in Pathology.

Health minister Veena George pointed that the new seats in Community Medicine is a step ahead for strengthening of treatment facilities, public healthcare and research, while the Pathology department would help in the betterment of the diagnosis.

Mentioning that more posts would also be created at the hospital, Minister George added, "This is also the result of the development works done by the government at the college despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The government is trying to get more PG seats and steps will be taken to start these courses as soon as possible."

While commenting on the NMC nod for new PG medical seats in two disciplines, she mentioned that the college is going to enter a new phase in patient care and added, "It is a matter of pride that the PG courses could be started within five years of the establishment of the medical college."
