No More New MBBS Seats in Tamil Nadu GMCs in 2023
Chennai: This year, any more undergraduate medical seats will not be added to the government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, the state Directorate of Medical Education has recently confirmed.
Even though the State is waiting for getting funds and permission for commencing six new medical colleges, no application has been submitted for increasing seats in the existing medical colleges, DME officials have informed TOI.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Health Ministry had shared the data regarding the number of MBBS and PG medical seats available in the country. As per the Health Ministry's data, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 11,275 MBBS seats in the country.
The State of Tamil Nadu has altogether 72 medical colleges including 37 state-run, one centrally-run AIIMS, Madurai, 20 self-financing and 12 deemed universities.

Recently, the apex medical education regulatory body NMC gave its nod for 150 MBBS Seats in a new self-financing medical college, PSP Medical College and Research Institute in Kancheepuram. With this, the total MBBS Seats in Tamil Nadu increased by another 150 MBBS seats.
However, as per the latest media report by the Times of India, DME officials have confirmed that they have not applied for any increase of MBBS seats in the government medical colleges. So it is unlikely that any more MBBS seats will be added to the seat matrix of the State during the 2023 admissions.
Meanwhile, the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian had earlier informed the daily that the State will begin with the construction work of the buildings only after getting the permission from the Central Government.
These new medical colleges will be set up in six districts of the State including Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tirupathur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram and Kallakurichi. Since these colleges will be constituted under the centrally funded project, the Central Government will contribute to 60% of the total funds.
