Chennai: Scared of failing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) examination, Tamil Nadu based 17-year-old NEET aspirant committed suicide by hanging himself in his room on Tuesday night in Natrampalli, Tirupattur.

With a desire to become a doctor, the student appeared for his first entrance exam on May 7. However, he felt that he did not do well in the exam. As a result of his lack of confidence regarding his exam, he felt stressed and worried that he would fail.

Before giving the exam, he also joined a private school in Parkur for NEET preparation. Unfortunately, all his efforts went into vain after he decided to take his life in fear of failing the exam.

The deceased was a native from Vellala Street, Jangalapuram next to Nattrampalli in Tirupathur district.

As per a media report in TOI, the incident took place on May 16 at night when his parents were not at home. Taking the opportunity, he hanged himself in his room upstairs. After his parents arrived, they began searching for him and found his room locked from inside. When several attempts to get a response failed, they broke the door and saw him hanging from the ceiling.

He was immediately taken to Natrampally Government Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Later, his father lodged a suicide complaint at the police station and a case was registered.

The student's mortal remains was recovered by the police and sent to Tirupattur Government Hospital for postmortem. An investigation is underway.

Since 2017, over 20 medical aspirants have died by suicide in the state due to either the pressure of the exam or the fear of not getting “high enough” marks.

The Stalin-led government in the state has already exempted medical students from appearing in the NEET exam. The state assembly passed the bill twice after the Governor refused to give his consent for the legislation when it was passed for the first time.

The bill was passed for a second time by the Assembly and the Governor forwarded it to the President for consent.

In the run-up to the Tamil Nadu elections, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party vowed to ban NEET in the state, alleging the exams for enrollment to medical colleges across India violates the principle of federalism, which is part of the basic structure of Constitution.
