Unable to Clear MBBS for 26 years! KGMU expels 4 students
Lucknow: King George's Medical University (KGMU) has cancelled the admission of four MBBS students as they failed to clear the MBBS examinations even after 26 years, despite getting several mercy attempts.
While one of these four students belong to the 1997 batch, another one was admitted in the year 1999. Two more students belonging to the 2001 and 2006 batches have also been debarred.
This decision has been taken by the University in accordance with the new rules, which clearly state that if a student fails to clear the MBBS examination in maximum 10 years, remains absent for more than a year, he/she shall be debarred from the campus.
KGMU introduced these new rules a year ago and the students have been debarred after getting approval regarding the same from the executive council of the University.
Commenting on this, the Spokesperson for KGMU, Dr. Sudhir Singh told Hindustan Times, "The rules have been made according to directions from National Medical Commission (NMC). Students who do not fulfil rules are facing action."
As per the latest media report by Times Now, despite being given several mercy attempts to clear the exam, these students failed every time. Finally the executive council of the University decided to cancel their admission as they were unable to clear even the examination of the first year. KGMU even conducted special classes for these students in order to help them clear the exam.
“The university cancelled admission of four students because they could not clear the examination for a long time," added Dr. Sudhir Singh.
The Daily adds that the KGMU executive council has identified around 37 other students who have been performing poorly for 10 years. Since KGMU has no fixed duration for completing the MBBS, some students remain enrolled for even 26 years. However, the KGMU executive council implemented the rules of the National Medical Commission (NMC) back in the year 2022.

Medical Dialogues had last year reported that KGMU had given an ultimatum to 37 MBBS students, who could not clear their MBBS degree examination for the last twenty years. Back then, the University had decided to expel them in case they failed to clear the exam even after one last chance.
Even though previously there was no rule at the maximum number of attempts for clearing the examination at KGMU. Later, after consulting the National Medical Commission (NMC), the University had set the timeline for clearing the MBBS examination at 10 years. It was decided that after 10 years, only 4 mercy attempts would be given.
Considering the rules of NMC, the admission of four MBBS students has now been cancelled. The University has been cancelling and monitoring the admission of students on the basis of these new norms. Apart from the criteria to clear the MBBS examination within a specific period of time, students who fail to attend classes for more than a year may also get revoked from KGMU.
Referring to this, Dr. Singh said, "Students who had enrolled long ago and failed to fulfil the university’s regulations were left with no alternative but to have their admissions canceled."
Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has finally published the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 in the official Gazette. The Regulations clearly state that now student shall be allowed to continue undergraduate medical course after nine (09) years from the date of admission into the course.
