UP appeals NMC to allow MBBS Admissions at 13 New Medical Colleges
Lucknow: After receiving the Letter of Disapproval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 13 newly established medical colleges, the Uttar Pradesh Government has now requested the Apex Medical Commission to authorize the commencement of MBBS courses at these institutes for the 2024-2025 academic session.
The UP Government had planned to commence admission at the 1300 MBBS seats in these 13 new government medical colleges. However, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body, NMC, denied granting its nod after shortcomings were pointed out during the inspection, including deficiencies in the infrastructure and faculty strength.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that these 13 new medical colleges were developed in Sultanpur, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Pilibhit, Auraiya, Sonbhadra, Bulandshahr, Gonda, Bijnor, Chandauli and Lakhimpur Kheri districts. Fifty-eight other medical colleges across the country were also denied permission. Over 100 of them had applied with NMC.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the UP Government has now requested the NMC to authorize the commencement of MBBS courses at 13 newly established medical colleges in the State for the 2024-2025 academic session.
Commenting on the matter, an official spokesperson said, "NMC initiated inspections for the LOP at all the nascent medical colleges, culminating on June 24. Subsequently, on July 4, the NMC issued a Letter of Disapproval, withholding permission for the admission of 100 MBBS students in the designated colleges."
Consequently, the medical colleges forwarded an appeal to the Apex Medical Commission and urged it to allow the commencement of the academic session.
However, if even after appeal, the NMC does not grant its permission, the medical education department of Uttar Pradesh can file an application with the Union Health Ministry for granting letter of permission, which is mandatory to take admission.
While the Commission did not give its permission for these 13 government medical colleges, the good news for medical aspirants is that the three medical colleges that were proposed to commence under the private-public-partnership model were granted permission to take in 150 candidates each. Apart from these institutes constituted in the PPP model, two other government medical colleges in UP received the Commission's nod for increasing the MBBS seats by 50 and 100 MBBS seats respectively.
