16 Indian Immunologists, Scientists shine in Stanford University 2025 Top 2% Scientists List

16 Indian Immunologists, scientists shine in Stanford University 2025 Top 2% Scientists List

New Delhi: Altogether 16 Indian Immunologists, scientists from prestigious health and medical institutes across India, have been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the database curated by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository.

This honour acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field. The database of Stanford University for the year 2025 of top-cited scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted h-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.

Here are the details of the Indian immunologists and scientists included in Stanford University's 2025 list:

1. Dr Vivek Chavda

Experienced Formulation scientist for Parenteral Formulation, Dr Vivek Chavda, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology of L M College of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He is a B Pharm and M Pharm Goldmedalist at Gujarat Technological University. He is a six sigma green belt from the university of Munich, Germany.

Before joining to Academics, he served to the Biologics industry for almost 7.5 years in Formulation and Process development (Research and Development) of Biologics with two successful regulatory filing at Lupin Biotech (Pune) and Dr Reddy’s Laboratory (Hyderabad). He has more than 70 national and international publications, 15 book chapters, 10 book chapters under communication, 1 patent in the pipeline and numerous newsletter articles to his credit.

He is currently editing 4 reference books with international publishers like Elsevier, Weily and CRC Press. His research interests include the development of biologics processes and formulations; medical device development, nanomaterials, nano-diagnostics and non-carrier formulations, long-acting parenteral formulations, and nano-vaccines.

As per the list, Dr Chavda holds a rank of 12,100 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 7,272 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 17, with a total of 1,222 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

2. Dr Kanjaksha Ghosh

Prof. (Dr.) Kanjaksha Ghosh, MBBS (Hon.), MD (Med.), DNB (Haem.), MNAMS (Path), MRCPI, MRCP (UK), MRCPath (Lond), FRCP (Glasg), FRCPath, FAMS, FACP, FNASc, FICP, FISHTM, is a distinguished haematologist and researcher, currently retired, who has held several prestigious positions including Director of the National Institute of Immunohaematology (ICMR), Mumbai, Director of the International Haemophilia Training Centre at NIIH and KEM Hospital, and Director of Surat Raktadan Kendra & Research Centre.

He has also served as Director of the BMT programme at SQUH, Oman, and Coordinator of the BMT programme at Leicester Royal Infirmary, UK, besides senior roles in Kuwait and India at PGIMER Chandigarh and KEM Hospital, Mumbai. With 756 research papers published in peer-reviewed national and international journals, over 150 research projects completed under ICMR, DBT, DST, CSIR, and international organisations, and more than 400 abstracts presented at conferences, Dr Ghosh has made significant contributions to medical research.

He has authored 34 book chapters, delivered over 30 orations, and served on numerous editorial boards, advisory committees, and selection panels. A key contributor to national guidelines in haemophilia, hemoglobinopathy, stem cell research, chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, and transfusion medicine, he has also been President of the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and Chairman of several technical and ethical committees. Additionally, he has been an examiner for PhD, DM, MD, and MSc programmes across India and abroad, shaping the future of medical education and research.

As per the list, Dr Ghosh holds a rank of 128,345 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 144,262 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with a total of 480 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

3. Prof Alok Srivastava

A renowned Haematologist, Prof Alok Srivastava, is Professor-Research and Head, Haematology Research Unit, St. John’s Research Institute and Senior Consultant, Department of Clinical Haematology in the St. John’s Medical College Hospital at Bengaluru, India. Prof. Srivastava has been involved with the management of patients with bleeding disorders for over 30 years. His recent focus has been on novel therapies, including gene therapy for haemophilia.

Prof. Srivastava is President of the Indian Association for Haemophilia & Allied Disorders. He is also the Chairman of the Association for Haemophilia & Allied Disorders – Asia-Pacific. He was the chair of the FVIII/IX subcommittee of the SSC of the ISTH from 2006 to 2010 and currently serves on the SSC Gene Therapy steering committee. He is a member of the board of the WFH and was the WFH Vice-President (Medical) from 2012 to 2014. He has led the writing group for all three editions of the WFH guidelines for the management of haemophilia.

As per the list, Dr Srivastava holds a rank of 175,722 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 125,899 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with a total of 602 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

4. Dr Rupesh Srivastava

During his doctoral research at NCCS, Pune, Dr Srivastava was introduced to the exciting field of immunology, which inspired him to further pursue research in Bone and Immunology at Columbia University Medical Centre, New York, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), New York, USA. After returning to India in 2013, he joined Central University, Sagar (M.P.) as an Assistant Professor and is now serving at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

His research focuses on the emerging field of Osteoimmunology (Frontiers in Biosciences, 2018), which explores the cellular and molecular interactions between the immune system (CD4, CD8 T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, macrophages, ILCs, etc.) and the skeletal system (osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and osteocytes). While these systems maintain homeostasis under normal physiology, imbalances triggered by infection, autoimmunity, environmental factors, aging, or hormonal changes can lead to inflammatory disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis (including post-menopausal osteoporosis).

Dr Srivastava's research aims to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies for inflammatory bone diseases.

As per the list, Dr Srivastava holds a rank of 177,721 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 181,571 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 13, with a total of 482 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

5. Girdhari Lal

Girdhari Lal, PhD, is a leading scientist in the field of immunology with research interests in the biology of cancer, chronic diseases, pathogenesis, and cellular response. He is currently Scientist F at the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, a position he has held since 2015, after serving as Scientist D at NCCS from 2010 to 2015.

Previously, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gene and Cell Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, where he also completed his post-doctoral fellowship from 2006 to 2010. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 2005, and earlier completed his M.Sc. from Dr. R.M.L. Avadh University, Uttar Pradesh.

Lal has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards and travel grants, including the Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award (IYBA 2010) by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, multiple Young Investigator Awards by the American Society of Transplantation between 2008–2010, and international travel grants by the American Association of Immunologists (AAI). He has also received the Keystone Symposia scholarships, NIAID-NIH recognition, and several quiz awards during his academic career.

His fellowships include the Swarnjayanti Fellowship (2019–2024) by the Department of Science and Technology, the Ramalingaswami Fellowship (2011) by the Department of Biotechnology, as well as CSIR Junior and Senior Research Fellowships and an IISc fellowship. With extensive international research experience and significant contributions to the field of immunology, Lal continues to play a prominent role in advancing biomedical research.

As per the list, Lal holds a rank of 177,154 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 199,555 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 11, with a total of 502 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

6. Dipyaman Ganguly

Professor Dipyaman Ganguly is a physician-scientist working on human immunology, currently a Professor in the Department of Biology at Ashoka University. He did his MBBS from Medical College, Kolkata, India, a PhD in Biotechnology from Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, India and another PhD in Immunology from UT MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, USA. After his postdoctoral research at Columbia University, New York City, USA, Prof. Ganguly came back to India in 2013 to start his independent laboratory at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata, where he continued his research till 2024.

The major research interests in Prof. Ganguly’s laboratory are in immunobiology of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in health and in the clinical contexts of autoreactive inflammation, as well as exploring the role of mechanical cues in human immune cellular functions. In addition, his laboratory has been closely engaged in several clinical trial efforts to map clinically relevant heterogeneity of immune response in the population through multi-omics immunophenotyping.

Prof. Ganguly is a recipient of NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Award (2017), Swarnajayanti Fellowship from Dept. of Science and Technology (2017), CDRI Award from CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, India (2018), National Bioscience Award from Dept. of Biotechnology (2018), Merck Young Scientist Award (2019) and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Medical Sciences from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India (2022). He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, and the Royal Society of Biology, UK.

As per the list, Ganguly holds a rank of 220,832 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 178,674 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 9, with a total of 387 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

7. Himanshu Kumar

Himanshu Kumar is a professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal. He completed his PhD in Immunology from the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan. He has authored 59 articles and was awarded the Ramanujan Fellowship from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India (July 2010-), Kishimoto Foundation Fellowship from WPI Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University (April 2010-June 2010), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Post-doctoral Fellowship from Government of Japan (April 2008-March 2010) and Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT) from Government of Japan (April 2003-March 2008) for pursuing doctoral thesis.

As per the list, Kumar holds a rank of 95,342 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 103,896 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with a total of 532 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

8. Jagadeesh Bayry

Having a research interest in Immunology, Immunotherapy, Host-pathogen interaction, vaccines, adjuvants and Mechanisms, Dr Jagadeesh Bayry, BVSc, MVSc, PhD, HDR is a Professor of Biological Sciences & Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad.

Prof. Bayry has authored 290 articles with over 12,500 citations and an h-index of 62. He has received a fellowship from the Academy of Translational Medicine Professionals, Austria. He serves as an Editor, Associate Editor or Editorial Board member of various journals and has edited four books from Springer Publisher. He has joined IIT Palakkad as a Professor of Biological Sciences & Engineering in 2021.

Prior to that, he was a Director of Research at National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Paris, France. He is also a member of a commission at the European Research Council (ERC) and served in 2021 as an advisory committee member for the Dutch Research Council. He has supervised 11 PhD fellows and successfully completed 32 research projects amounting to 4.5 million € as principal investigator.

As per the list, Bayry holds a rank of 69,498 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 75,466 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 12, with a total of 1,158 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

9. Rekha Khandia

Rekha Khandia presently works as an Assistant Professor in Genetics in the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, India. She has vivid experience working in a biosafety containment facility 3 and worked on pathogens like anthrax, Nipah, and H5N1 Avian Influenza.

She has experience in working on reverse genetics and successfully rescued a tailored Influenza virus for vaccine purposes. She has 12 years of working experience in the making of killed, attenuated, subunit, and DNA vaccine candidates against viral and bacterial pathogens. Dr Khandia is presently working on computational aspects related to immunoinformatics and codon usage.

Khandia is a researcher and an academician who has published 70-plus manuscripts with an H index of 25, more than 9000 citations, and an overall impact factor of 175-plus for all published papers.

As per the list, Dr Khandia holds a rank of 141,378 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 134,915 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 13, with a total of 886 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

10. Rituraj Niranjan

A cellular and molecular immunologist, Rituraj Niranjan, is currently working as a Scientist-D in the area of immune system-associated disorders. Besides cellular and molecular immunology research, he is engaged in different immune system-associated disorders like immunopathogenesis of DENGUE fever, mechanisms of immune dysfunctions in other vector-borne diseases, allergy and immunology, tissue remodelling and fibrosis, autophagy, acute kidney failure, neuroinflammation, nanoparticle-based drug delivery system and immunocompromise disorders.

Rituraj Niranjan's work focuses on the role of Interleukin-15 (IL-15) in the lungs, gastrointestinal and other immune disorders. He has done his PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in the area of immuno-neuropharmacology working at the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, India

He completed his first post-doctoral fellowship from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, USA and then did his second post-doctoral fellowship from Cincinnati Children Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA and latter at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland USA. Before joining to the Indian Council of Medical Research as a talent search scientist (TSS-ICMR), he was working as a scientist at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K), India.

As per the list, Niranjan holds a rank of 149,422 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 159,160 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 5, with a total of 437 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

11. Vijay Kumar Reddy Kondreddy

Vijay Kumar Reddy, Kondreddy, completed his BS degree in 2008 and MS degree in 2010 from Sri Venkateshwara University, Tirupati, India. He did his doctoral studies on the topic " Studies on lipids as modulators of mucosal immunity and Inflammation" in December 2016. Subsequently, he joined as a post-doctoral research associate with Dr Rao LVM at The University of Texas, Texas, USA. He received post-doctoral training in cell-signalling, coagulation biology, vascular biology and Inflammation.

From July 2022, Vijay began working as a Scientist at CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad, India. His future research interests are to understand how the cell-signalling adaptor protein called Gab2 relays cell-signalling of proinflammatory receptors and contributes to the inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and development of cardiovascular diseases. These studies enable the identification of Gab2-signalling blockers as novel therapeutics to treat pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases.

As per the list, Kondreddy holds a rank of 159,865 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 115,851 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 5, with a total of 151 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

12. Kamla Prasad Mishra

KP Mishra is presently working as a senior scientist at DRDO-Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Delhi. His areas of research are Immunophysiology, Viral immunology and Neuroinflammation. His special interest is environmental hypoxia-induced immune alterations and therapeutic development.

Mishra has more than 20 years of research experience in the field of Immunology. He has participated in the XXVIII Indian Antarctic expedition to study the effect of the stressful environment of Antarctica on the human immune system. He is also a member of various committees of Ph. D programmes and serves as ad-hoc reviewer for international peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India. Dr Mishra has also received several national and international awards in the field of Immunology.

As per the list, Prasad holds a rank of 173,457 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 173,076 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 7, with a total of 229 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

13. Chandra Mohan

Chandra Mohan from K.R. Mangalam University has earned a place on Stanford’s prestigious list in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of Immunology.

As per the list, Mohan holds a rank of 166,243 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 159,045 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 12, with a total of 544 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

14. Anita D'Souza

Recognised for her remarkable contributions to Immunology, Anita D'Souza from the Manipal Institute of Technology has been featured in the esteemed Stanford list.

As per the list, Anita holds a rank of 145,984 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 138,012 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 12, with a total of 789 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).

15. Vinay Siva Senthil Kumar
