Duty Doctor Found Dead in Trauma Centre Washroom at GMCH Chandigarh
Chandigarh: In a tragic incident, a first-year postgraduate medico in the department of Internal Medicine was found dead inside a washroom at the Trauma Centre of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, on Tuesday.
According to the news reports, the junior resident doctor was found unconscious inside a locked bathroom cubicle after colleagues became concerned over his prolonged absence during duty hours. Staff members reportedly forced the door open after repeated knocks went unanswered.
Emergency medical efforts were immediately initiated, but doctors were unable to revive him.
Following the incident, police officials from the Sector 34 police station and forensic experts were called to the scene. Investigators recovered several syringes from the bathroom. Authorities have emphasized that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after an autopsy and toxicological examination.
Speaking to TOI, hospital sources said the doctor had shown signs of severe emotional distress in recent days. Investigators are interviewing his family, fellow doctors, and hospital administrators to determine whether his distress was linked to workplace pressures or personal matters.
Originally from Jalandhar, the doctor had moved to Chandigarh approximately three months ago to begin his postgraduate medical training. He had been residing in the college hostel since joining the residency programme. His family arrived in Chandigarh shortly after being informed of the incident.
The incident left his colleagues and staff members in shock, with many gathering outside the Trauma Centre after learning of his death, reports The Indian Express.
Medical dialogues had previously reported that in an unfortunate incident, a 34-year-old postgraduate medico from the department of Surgery at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house in Jharkhand's Ranchi district. The police, in their preliminary investigation, revealed that they found no signs of suicide or murder. His family members informed the police that he was suffering from high blood pressure and was on medication.
