2 Karnataka Doctors Among Top 50 UPSC Rank holders

Bengaluru and Haveri Doctors Among UPSC Top 50
Bengaluru: Two young doctors from Karnataka have secured top ranks in the prestigious Civil Services (Main) Examination 2024, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Notably, both achievers are medical graduates who transitioned from medicine to administration in their quest to serve society on a larger scale.
Dr R. Rangamanju from Bengaluru and Dr Sachin Basavaraj Guttur from Haveri district have emerged among the top 50 rank holders in the country, securing All India Ranks (AIR) 24 and 41, respectively.
Dr. R. Rangamanju
Dr. Rangamanju, who completed his medical graduation at Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute, appeared for the exam for the sixth time. He credits his success to "consistency, patience, and hard work." He dedicated his achievement to his father, saying, “My father was my biggest inspiration. He passed away while serving as an IPS officer.”

Speaking to The Hindu, he added, “I completed my schooling at National Public School, Rajajinagar, and graduated from medical school at Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute. It was my sixth attempt at the exam, so I feel very fortunate to have made it this time. I owe it all to my mother, who is my biggest source of support. She encouraged me through all my previous attempts. I also owe a lot to my Biology teacher, who’s now the Principal of NPS Rajajinagar.”
Dr Rangamanju mentioned that Anthropology was taken up as the main subject in the examination. No formal training was received for either the prelims or the main exam. Group studies were conducted with friends, and previous years’ question papers were regularly solved. Interview guidance was obtained at an academy.
Dr. Sachin B. Guttur
The other rank holder, Dr. Sachin B. Guttur, hailing from Kodeyala Hosapete in Ranebennur, has secured AIR 41 in CSE. Dr. Sachin Guttur is the son of a farmer and brick manufacturer, Mr. Basavaraj, and a homemaker.
A graduate of JJM Medical College in Davanagere, he initially pursued medicine to fulfill his father’s wishes but eventually found his calling in civil services. His early education took place in Harihara and Davanagere, and although he initially went to Delhi for preparation, the COVID-19 pandemic brought him back to Karnataka. He continued his studies in Bengaluru and later returned to Delhi for further preparation. His perseverance bore fruit in his fourth attempt.

Expressing happiness over his son’s success, his father, Mr. Basavaraj, said that he wanted his son to be a doctor, and accordingly, he completed his medical education. “However, he later chose to prepare for civil services and has worked hard for the last five years,” he said, Hindu reports.
This year, over 30 candidates from Karnataka cracked the Civil Services Examination. Among them was Dr. Dayanand, former President of the Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD), who secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 615.
