25-year-old man poses as woman doctor at Nagpur hospital, arrested

Nagpur: The Nagpur police arrested a 25-year-old man pretending to be a woman doctor at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) on Wednesday.

The person moved around the college by impersonating the doctor for almost three weeks before he was caught on Wednesday, said the police.

The accused, who wore a burqa on the hospital premises and identified himself as `Dr Ayesha’, told police that he was gay and posed as a woman to befriend men, said an official of the Tehsil police station.

Nobody suspected his identity as he interacted with the hospital staff as well as the patients until personnel of the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) posted at the hospital became suspicious, the official said.

After the MSF personnel alerted the police, the deception came to light and the man was arrested, he said. He was married but his wife had left him, the official said.

A case was registered against him for cheating, impersonation and other relevant offences under the Indian Penal Code and further probe was on, the police official said.

Dr Sagar Pande, deputy medical superintendent at IGGMCH, said, “Our security personnel had never seen this person before and frankly no doctor goes around hiding their face. We have Muslim female doctors who wear a hijab that covers the head only. But since the burqa was hiding the entire face, security personnel became suspicious”, reports Opindia.

The accused was taken into custody and booked under IPC section 171 (Wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent), 380 (theft), and 451 (House-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment).
